Community Relations Coordinator - Wollongong

Cancer Council NSW
  • Partnering with local community; having local impact; building strong local relationships
  • Internal promotion has created this backfill opportunity in a reshaped version of the role, with a heightened focus on being the community fundraising conduit for Cancer Council NSW

Cancer Council NSW (CCNSW) is a 94% community funded, community focused not for profit. Our unique combination of local program delivery, community engagement and national influence enables everyone who cares about cancer to make the biggest possible difference.

Summarise the role!

Building and maintaining relations in the local community will enable you to fundraise for cancer research and information and support. With COVID changing the way we run fundraising events, this role will value your innovative way of thinking and your strategic approach to raising revenue!

Primarily based in our Wollongong office, with a balanced approach to WFH, you will work closely with our large team of committed volunteers and local supporters ensuring that CCNSW is able to connect with, and understand, the distinct needs of the communities in which we work.

That knowledge will assist you in ensuring the delivery of CCNSW community fundraising campaigns and events such:

  • Do It For Cancer (DIFC); This is where people set up their own fundraising event (big or small) and with the support of this role, are assisted through fundraising strategy initiatives; marketing support; right through to moral support to keep them engaged and motivated
  • ABMT - Using our nationally recognised fundraising events individuals or teams, with the support of this role, are assisted through fundraising strategy initiatives; marketing support; and that moral support to keep them engaged and motivated
  • Longest Day - Supporting fundraisers who take up the challenge to successfully complete four rounds of golf from dawn to dusk and raise funds for Cancer Council's research, prevention, and support services

This is so much more than a fundraising role and will allow you the opportunity to work independently to meet targets and raise our brand profile. Expectations are high, but the purpose of the role, and the knowledge of doing something with a purpose, will reward you every day.

Reporting to the Community lead, you will be joining a high performing close-knit team who will welcome your collaborative approach and sharing of ideas. Key elements of the role will be to:

  • Raise the profile of CCNSW as the local cancer charity and maintain high levels of brand and service recognition
  • Identify and realise opportunities for the community to contribute to our organisation mission through local fundraising initiatives.
  • Partner closely with the wider team to ensure integration of cancer prevention, information and supportive care as part of all fundraising programs and events
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with CCNSW staff; volunteers working within the community offices; and local communities
  • Effectively motivate, coach and influence volunteers to assist in the delivery of fundraising objectives

What skills are we looking for?

A collaborative approach in this role is essential - Collaboration with your community, your teammates, our volunteers and the wider CCNSW team. This role will also draw on your expertise in:

  • Exceptional relationship and stakeholder engagement skills including change mgmt. skills
  • PR, fundraising or marketing skills/qualifications
  • Ability to pick up the phone and reach out to supporters as well as provide some technical support/understanding in this new era with online fundraising
  • An ability to adapt and tailor your approach
  • Project Management e.g. Planning, development and coordination
  • Enjoyment and drive to achieve and exceed financial targets
  • Strategic approach and ability to think innovatively, supported by commercial awareness

This is not your average job, so it's not average hours! Because of the nature of working with the community, flexibility to work some evenings and some weekends will be required, with peak times of year sometimes resulting in evening meetings plus attending events on weekends.

Frequent travel to the communities you support will be required. You will be covering different geographical areas so you will need your C Class Driver's license. Access to a pool vehicle is available.

**Please note internally these roles are called Community Relations Coordinator
