The team

As part of the Cancer Information and Support Services Division, our Information and Support team know cancer can affect every area of people’s lives. 13 11 20 is our support line where people call and ask about anything to do with cancer, including how to prevent cancer, understanding a new cancer diagnosis, caring for someone with cancer, or end of life issues.

Our 13 11 20 Consultants are experienced Health Professionals, and this service is often the first point of call for practical and emotional support. People that call want more information about cancer. They can have questions regarding:

  • Diagnosis
  • Management or treatment options
  • They may need emotional support while undergoing treatment, making decisions or coming to terms with their circumstances
  • Callers may need assistance with the practical day-to-day issues that can arise following a diagnosis and during treatment, which impact other areas of their life.

In addition, as cancer treatments improve, an ever-increasing number of people are living longer after a cancer diagnosis and adjusting to life after cancer. Are you someone who could assist? If yes, please keep reading!

What’s involved?

This is a telephone and online based role that provides information and support to people that have been impacted by cancer. The role ensures that callers have access to comprehensive, complete and credible information and are referred to a range of practical and emotional services offered by Cancer Council.

Based primarily in our Woolloomooloo office will see you:

  • Provide information and emotional support to callers of our Cancer Council Information and Support line
  • Provide written information to enquiries received through the website
  • Assist in the updating of oncology services and cancer programs so as to ensure that the database remains current and reliable for users
  • Appropriately refer callers to relevant internal and external support services
  • Participate in continually improving medical knowledge on current treatments and support services for cancer patients and be willing to undertake further training if required
  • Take an active role and assist with the development and delivery of current and future cancer information and support service provision

With career growth opportunities, this role will also see you participate and contribute to the implementation of the research studies that extend knowledge about ways to support people with cancer PLUS contribute to the analysis of issues raised by callers to inform and improve service delivery within Cancer Services Unit and external cancer services.

  • Tertiary qualifications in a health related field (e.g nursing or allied health)
  • Knowledge about cancer prevention, screening, risk factors and early detection
  • Ability to translate complex medical information simply
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a collaborative approach
  • Enjoyment working within a phone and email based environment
  • Flexibility to work Tuesday, Thursday and Friday would be looked on favourably
