Caxton Legal Centre represents the interests of people who are disadvantaged or low-income earners when they come into contact with the Law. Caxton is seeking a full-time lawyer to work in our Human Rights and Civil Law Practice.

The successful applicant will be responsible for providing legal advice and casework within our Queensland Retirement Villages and Manufactured Home Park Advisory Service (QRVPAS). The role includes providing legal advice and casework assistance to individuals and groups of individuals who are residents in retirement villages and manufactured home parks and who are in dispute with the owners or operators of their park or village.

When safe to do so, the role also includes provision of community legal education to groups of residents and includes occasional overnight travel within Queensland. Other duties from time to time may include stakeholder engagement (attendance at meetings/forums), drafting of blog posts and case studies, working with pro bono firms and barristers, research and law reform work, and supervision of volunteers and students. Occasionally duties may be undertaken outside of the QRPVAS program.

Rarely for a role in our Human Rights and Civil Law Practice, this position is suitable for an earlier career lawyer. We are open to applications from both unrestricted (level 5) and restricted (level 4) practitioners provided the candidate has excellent skills working with vulnerable clients, especially older people, plus enthusiasm for the area of practice.

Key accountabilities

  • Deliver legal advice and casework as directed by the Practice Director and Senior Lawyer
  • Work collaboratively to provide a holistic, client-centred service to diverse clients within a human rights framework
  • Deliver community education, engage in sector development and networking, contribute to law and policy reform
  • Accurately maintain records including electronic files and advice records, and time recording

Essential requirements

  • Bachelor of Laws
  • Experience in a relevant area of civil law such as contracts or civil litigation and an ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of retirement villages and manufactured home park laws
  • Admitted or eligible for admission as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of Queensland
  • Current or eligible for a Queensland Practicing Certificate
  • A current Queensland Driver’s License
  • Evidence of current vaccination against COVID-19

The successful applicant will have the ability to work with clients with complex legal and social issues and provide advice to clients who may have an impairment or be culturally or linguistically diverse.

A position description is attached.

Please note: Only those successful in gaining an interview will be contacted.
