Youth & Schools Engagement Officer

Catholic Mission
  • Full-time fixed term (12 months) position based in Brisbane, QLD
  • Build on the success of Socktober initiative in schools and communities around Australia

This is an exceptional opportunity to join the international mission agency of the Catholic Church in Australia, which supports children, communities and church leaders both in Australia and overseas.

Reporting to the Diocesan Director for the Archdiocese of Brisbane, your primary duty is to engage youth and schools across the QLD/NT in our revamped Socktober initiative as well as engage youth in mission and evangelisation.

During World Mission Month in October each year, Catholic Mission invites schools to participate in Socktober following our head, heart and hands model: encouraging a learning mind, an open heart and hands for action. Socktober builds on Pope Francis’ recent initiative Sport at the Service of Humanity and challenges children to experience their faith in action. Socktober is a whole of community engagement tool and builds an understanding of the mission in a face to face approach as well as an online and offline approach. The international game of soccer is used as a vehicle for understanding mission using our unique Socktober educational and fundraising platform: www.socktober.org.au. With over 1700 Catholic Schools across Australia, Socktober has the potential to engage schools in the mission in a way that is interactive and fun. A broader engagement of Socktober into soccer clubs is an opportunity to grow into the wider community. Working across multiple key stakeholders, this position is responsible to take Socktober into the regional settings supporting diocesan teams and schools in developing engaging Socktober event days in October to provide an enriched experience of the work of Catholic Mission.

To succeed in this role you will need to:

  • Be eligible to work in Australia
  • Have knowledge and experience of principles and techniques of fundraising, social marketing and social media within the not for profit sector
  • Be a natural organiser and be able to confidently manage competing deadlines, multiple tasks and a broad range of stakeholders
  • Passionate about engagement within the school environment including teachers, parents, students and broader school community
  • Have good time management and attention to detail
  • Have tertiary qualifications at degree level in a relevant discipline (eg, in education, theology, fundraising or sales/marketing)
  • Have excellent communication skills including active listening, presenting, facilitating and telephone
  • Have your driver’s licence and be prepared to travel within the VIC/TAS region
  • Be prepared to work a flexible schedule
  • Be able to adapt to dynamic circumstances quickly and respond with energy

Due to the essential breadth of involvement with catholic schools, religious education coordinators, clergy and the Catholic Church’s evangelisation activities, this position is identified as requiring a Catholic who will have an understanding of, appreciation for and commitment to promoting Catholic principles, values and global mission; understand the structure of the Catholic Church; hold an affinity for Catholic values and beliefs, principles of justice, human rights and Catholic Social Teaching.

Catholic Mission supports their employees with a number of benefits such as time-in-lieu and flexible working arrangements, as well as a salary package commensurate with your experience that includes the ability to arrange salary sacrifice depending on your circumstances. There is an Employee Assistance Program, above-award holiday breaks and an annual performance development and review program. You can look forward to becoming part of a growing and dynamic team.

Please note: The successful applicant is subject to a National Criminal History Check and a Working with Children Check (and the Vulnerable); Only those selected for an interview will be contacted within 2 weeks of the closing date.
