Senior Communications Officer

This is an exceptional opportunity to join the international mission agency of the Catholic Church in Australia, which supports children, communities and church leaders both in Australia and overseas.

Reporting to the Deputy National Director, the primary focus of this job is to:

  • Plan and deliver all communications output for Catholic Mission in accordance with prepared strategies and timelines;
  • Advise internal and external stakeholders on matters relating to communications, acting as the communications service provider;
  • Manage internal communications, utilising a range of means including Mission Matters and the Dropbox;
  • Develop and drive an integrated communications strategy and proactively seek the means of gaining publicity and raising the profile of Catholic Mission through new and traditional media forms;
  • Liaise with media and prepare publicity timelines, delivering media releases and background when required and in response to impromptu events.

In addition, there is the potential to travel to overseas projects to gather information for fundraising, marketing and communications purposes.

To succeed in this role you will need to:

  • Be eligible to work in Australia;
  • Have tertiary qualifications at degree level in Communications, Marketing, Media or equivalent;
  • Have an understanding of the mission and values of Catholic Mission and our place in a global Catholic context;
  • Have a minimum of 4 years experience in a communications, media or public relations role;
  • Have experience driving communications projects and publications from conceptualisation through planning, budgeting and delivery;
  • Have experience with media liaison.

The skills that are sought include:

  • Outstanding communications ability (both in written and oral);
  • High level editing and proofreading skills along with attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently;
  • Ability to work independently and be self-directed; Sound judgement and problems solving skills;
  • Social media skills including Twitter, Facebook and YouTube; Sound content management systems skills and MS Office skills;
  • Have your driver’s licence and be prepared to travel within the Sydney region;
  • Be prepared to travel nationally on occasion;
  • Be prepared to work a flexible schedule;
  • Be able to adapt to dynamic circumstances quickly and respond with energy.

Due to the essential breadth of involvement with catholic schools, clergy and the Catholic Church’s evangelisation activities, this position is identified as requiring a Catholic who will have an understanding of, appreciation for and commitment to promoting Catholic principles, values and global mission; understand the structure of the Catholic Church; hold an affinity for Catholic values and beliefs, principles of justice, human rights and Catholic Social Teaching.
