About AH&MRC

The Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council of New South Wales (AH&MRC) is the peak representative body and voice of Aboriginal communities on health in NSW. We represent our members, the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) that deliver culturally appropriate comprehensive primary health care to their communities.

Aboriginal Community Control has its origins in Aboriginal peoples’ right to self-determination. This is the right to be involved in health service delivery and decision-making according to the protocols or procedures determined by Aboriginal communities based on the Aboriginal definition of health: Aboriginal health means not just the physical well-being of an individual but the social, emotional and cultural wellbeing of the whole Community in which each individual is able to achieve their full potential as a human being thereby bringing about the total wellbeing of their Community. It is a whole of life view and includes the cyclical concept of life-death-life.

About the Role

The NDIS Engagement and Sustainability Officer is responsible for building the capacity of the ACCHO sector to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with disabilities through NDIS Access, Pre-Planning and Plan Implementation. The role will work with our member services to register as a NDIS provider, particularly expanding NDIS to regional and remote NSW communities.

Responsibilities:

• Undertake a need analysis with ACCHOs to identify readiness to deliver or support NDIS services
• Engage the ACCHOs to educate the NDIS program and better understand how to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to access services through NDIS
• Gather information from ACCHOs and community to understand the barriers to accessing NDIS
• Develop an interest group with local Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services to support education on NDIS and the NDIS readiness
• Engage and consult with other key stakeholders who are able to influence the health of the communities in the region
• Collaborate with other program managers across AH&MRC to ensure an integrated approach to activity delivery
• Establish an annual budget for the regional health strategy, ensuring that organisational resources (people, time and money) are utilised and linked to organisational strategic priorities
• Develop and implement milestones and timelines for reporting requirements for program and core department needs

About You

To be successful you will have:

• Tertiary qualification in community service – disability, health service management, community development or related field, and up to 5 years relevant work experience specifically in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health
• Excellent interpersonal communication
• Sound negotiation and decision-making skills
• Ability to provide sound financial budget management and reporting
• Strong commitment to health and safety, and the ability to implement compliance with health and safety legislation and all WHS policies and procedures
