about the role

This is a new role for the Caroline Chisholm Society located in Shepparton.

Reporting to the Pregnancy and Early Parenting Manager, the Pregnancy and Early Parenting Practitioner at the Caroline Chisholm Society delivers support services to women including assessment, counselling, single session & short-term case work, referral and advocacy. The role is responsible for the planning, delivery and coordination of services for clients and their family, to best meet their needs and achieve agreed goals.

The successful applicant will have case work experience and a strong understanding of pregnancy, early parenting and the early years. You will have good communication, risk management, intervention, assessment and judgement skills.

Applicants will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of current legislation including the Child, Youth & Families Act (2005); frameworks including the Best Interest Framework, Information Sharing schemes and the MARAM Framework.

A tertiary qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Welfare or equivalent is required.

KEY selection CRITERIA:

  • Understand and share the values and objectives of the Caroline Chisholm Society with preparedness to advocate for those values.
  • Have casework experience and knowledge of pregnancy and teaching early parenting skills in complex family environments.
  • Have experience in a specialisation which could include maternal and infant health education, including active outreach in maternal and infant supports.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise judgement in dealing with crisis situations and asses risk to safety of self and others.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently within the policies and procedures of Caroline Chisholm Society while being responsive to direction.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated reliability in organisational, administration and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated literacy MSOffice suite and working knowledge of databases and online reporting systems.
  • Desirable: training in SafeCare, Bringing Up Great Kids; Parenting Under Pressure.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated that they:

  1. Understand and share the values and objectives of the Caroline Chisholm Society.
  2. Have experience in working with families in the welfare/community sector, home based family services and in pregnancy and early parenting.
  3. Have extensive knowledge of child development and the factors that impact on their development
  4. An innovative approach to engagement of families
  5. Experience working in both community and home-based settings
  6. Experience in delivering parenting education programs.
  7. Experience in assessments.
  8. Are able to manage quality improvement functions, including understanding of good process and accountability.
  9. Have good written communications skills including ability to review and develop written policies and procedures.
  10. Have good oral communications skills, and to be confident to liaise both internally and externally with staff and stakeholders.
  11. Are able to manage adjunct services including seeking and acquitting funding, allocating work, implementing policy and fulfilling compliance requirements.
  12. Exercise judgement soundly and decisively, especially when dealing with crisis situations.
  13. Degree in Social Work or other tertiary qualification with counselling competencies and have substantial experience delivering parent education programs including training in at least two current parent education program approaches (i.e., SafeCare, Triple P, Bringing Up Great Kids, Parenting Under Pressure).
