The Organisation

Care has been the main provider of financial counselling and related services in the ACT since 1983. We pride ourselves on providing high quality services with a strong client focus. All our programs are free and independent.

The Consumer Law Centre (CLC) is a program of Care providing legal advice, casework and advocacy primarily in the areas of credit, debt and Australian Consumer Law. We also run a specialised advice service for people who have experienced, or are experiencing, financial abuse. The CLC also delivers the Defined Benefit Information Service, providing information and advice to people injured in a motor vehicle accident about obtaining benefits under the new motor accident injuries scheme in the ACT.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and friendly solicitor with experience working with people who have been impacted by domestic and family violence, and particularly financial abuse, to provide legal advice and casework in response to economic abuse matters.

The Role

The Solicitor works under the general direction of The Consumer Law Centre Principal Solicitor. They are expected to have a high level of communication and technical skills.

The Solicitor is one of a small legal team within Care Inc. and is responsible for the provision of information, legal advice, casework and representation within the Centre’s area of expertise.

The Solicitor is required to work closely with other CLC staff and Care’s financial counselling team and support the work of the financial counsellors through provision of worker’s advice and staff training.

This is on an initial 12-month contract. As with all of Care’s employment contracts the position is reliant on continued funding being available.
