The opportunity

The Research Lead - Climate and Emissions will remain oriented to the latest developments in the detection, regulation and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions including CO2 and methane. You will navigate complex and technical areas of GHG accounting and regulation, sift net-zero targets separating the meaningful from greenwash, and analyse complicated and potentially fraught issues such as offsets and CCS.

Using your insights and analysis, you will support The Sunrise Project’s strategists and partners, ensuring their strategies are both ambitious and focused on achieving their shared goal - meaningful action towards actual zero emissions across the economy.

Your role will include:

  • Leading organisational understanding of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions and the regulatory environment related to them
  • Leading organisational understanding of the climate change significance of Australia’s fossil fuel sector
  • Seeking to engage more closely with the issue of fugitive methane, especially in relation to Australia’s coal and gas industries
  • Supporting your strategist colleagues to navigate fraught climate-related topics including CCS, offsets, carbon credits and net-zero targets
  • Investigate and elucidate the greenhouse gas emissions and climate targets of Australian corporations and industrial sectors
  • Foster and maintain a network of movement-peers and issue experts, cultivating collaborations and encouraging knowledge sharing

About you

You thrive on following a trail and extracting as much information and interpreting it into meaningful, insightful and digestible research. Previous experience in science communications, policy development or conducting research in journalistic, political or advocacy contexts would serve as a helpful background for this role.

Equally you are passionate about positively contributing to combatting the climate emergency facing our planet and have a demonstrated commitment to action on climate change.

In addition, you will have:

  • A solid understanding of greenhouse gas emission sources and accounting
  • A strong understanding of the science and state-of-the-art of fugitive emissions detection and quantification, an advantage
  • A strong working knowledge of Australian greenhouse gas and climate regulation and policy
  • Highly developed research, investigative, numerical, analytical, and reporting skills, with an excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesise and distil complex technical information for a non-specialist audience
  • Advanced data visualisation skills an advantage

If your relevant experience is from volunteering, from the grassroots or is lived experience and you meet some but not all the criteria for this position, but you’re keen on the role and believe in the cause, please get in touch.
