Balance of Power (BOP, the Program) is a Pacific-led initiative, supported by the Australian Government, focused on enabling women and men in the Pacific to improve the political, social and economic opportunities for women and girls.
The program goal is that “women are increasingly culturally, socially and politically accepted, and act, as legitimate political leaders and decision makers across the Pacific region.” Balance of Power works intensively in three countries (Vanuatu, Fiji and Tonga), with some elements to be implemented across the region.
Balance of Power’s approaches and strategies are tailored to each country context. It is taking new, innovative approaches to providing pathways to change around deeply entrenched social norms, thinking and working politically with diverse stakeholders in the Women in Politics sector to maximise cohesion and coordination of effort.
BOP is working with key power-holders in Vanuatu, Tonga, and Fiji, and within regional peak bodies, to shift negative perceptions around the value and legitimacy of women’s leadership. BOP’s key partners include the media and high-status advocates within government, churches, and traditional and chiefly structures. BOP supports these societal influencers to use their voice and networks to raise the profile of women and their role in inclusive national development.
We are seeking a highly motivated Country Manager with a strong adherence to key values such as gender equality, respect, inclusion, humility, innovation, and creativity. The Tonga Country Manager will have overall responsibility for the management of the BOP’s country activities in Tonga through the provision of specialist local knowledge, advice, and expertise.
The Tonga Country Manager will play an integral part in representing the BOP program to DFAT, Government and other stakeholders; identifying strategic opportunities for BOP in country; convening and maximising coordination between BOP partners; meaningful participation in, and support to, the Strategic Advisory Committee; oversight of finance, administrative and logistical functions; and monitoring and reporting on BOP activities.
