The Role

MRC (Metropolitan Remand Centre) are looking for a motivated individual to join their team as an AOD Counsellor. Reporting to the Senior Clinician, the ideal candidate will work directly with clients to support Forensic Drug and Alcohol Treatment Services at the location based in Ravenhall.

The aim of this role is to introduce clients to, and keep clients engaged, in treatment with AOD services at MRC. The principle role of the candidate is to meet with men who arrive at the location and provide an orientation to the Drug and Alcohol Treatment service, assist prisoners with release planning, engage in interviews with prisoners involved in substance use and attend prisoner case management meetings to assist with appropriate referral pathways of prisoners with AOD concerns.

Key Responsibilities

Service Delivery

  • Case management
  • Identify treatment needs and maintain relationships with clients
  • Provide information to clients about their access to treatment
  • Monitor incoming and AOD queue lists
  • Referral and Priority list management
  • Prisoner release planning
  • IDU Reviews
  • Attend CMRC meetings

Administrative tasks

  • Maintenance of wait lists and evaluation forms
  • Participation in evaluation of programs
  • Uploading data onto Caraniche systems

Key Qualifications and Experience

  • Qualifications in AOD, welfare, case work psychology or related health profession
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of working with clients with drug and alcohol issues and/or forensic clients
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to develop relationships with other service providers
  • Ability to build rapport and set boundaries with the offending population
  • Highly developed administrative skills including strong computer skills
  • Full Driver’s Licence desirable
  • Sound knowledge of the AOD sector within Victoria (highly regarded)
