The State Library of Queensland has established itself as one of Australia’s leading custodians of cultural knowledge and memory and supports a vibrant state-wide network of more than 320 public libraries and Indigenous Knowledge Centres (IKC). Discovery through truth telling and knowledge creation is critical to celebrating First Nations perspectives and engaging the community and public in the power of diversity.

The First Nations engagement branch leads engagement with First Nations communities, exploring opportunities for formal partnerships and the transfer and cultivation of knowledge and access to collections

Reporting to the Executive Director of Public Libraries and Engagement, this role will further expand existing First Nations engagement and partnerships to nurture meaningful connections with culture, history and knowledge. Culturally informed leadership will strengthen existing First Nations strategic engagement, building on the innovative work of Indigenous Knowledge Centres, kuril dhgaun and high-profile programs and initiatives.

Strong leadership to advance strategic priorities ensuring the voice of community is represented across collections, and programs are critical activities for this position.

Key functions connected to the role include:

  • Provide leadership and team development in the delivery of strategy and initiatives that acknowledge First Nations knowledge, stories and cultures.
  • Build strategic and sustainable relationships with external stakeholders across community, government and industry, including official representation on external stakeholder engagement forums
  • Support the advancement of First Nations’ strategic priorities across the State Library and in partnership with public libraries and IKCs through the delivery of high quality onsite, online and state-wide services to support innovative and inclusive engagement strategies and programs.
  • Develop, foster, and promote good relationships with community stakeholders, to enhance engagement from across Queensland. Demonstrate and lead model cultural awareness and good practice in working with communities and promote Reconciliation through engagement with the Library and its collections.

The successful candidate will be instrumental in achieving the State Library’s commitment to elevate First Nations arts and culture through language revitalisation, knowledge creation and truth-telling in culturally informed and respectful ways.
