About your environment

The South Australia (SA) Quitline is a joint initiative of Cancer Council Victoria and SA Health. Since its establishment in 1936, Cancer Council Victoria has developed an international reputation for innovative work in cancer research, prevention and support.

The SA Quitline, which includes a dedicated Aboriginal Quitline, is managed by Quit, the Cancer Council’s nationally-recognised peak group dedicated to supporting people who smoke to become tobacco-free.

The Quitline telehealth clinical service provides access to free and confidential telephone counselling plus information and advice through telephone and messaging services.

Although you’ll be working from home, ongoing support and engagement is provided in real-time through a peer support network, and through frequent clinical supervision and Quitline team meetings.

About your opportunity

We are seeking a dedicated Aboriginal Quitline Counsellor who wants to use their counselling skills and experience to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to stop smoking. This position will be based in SA and will work from home using a sophisticated telehealth platform.

Reporting to the Quitline Manager (based in Victoria), your role will be to:

  • Provide specialist telephone information, advice and individualised counselling to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (and non-Aboriginal) smokers who want to quit smoking
  • Respond to incoming calls and online messages, which may be sensitive in nature
  • Play an integral role in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers and communities to reduce smoking prevalence
  • Liaise and network with local communities, occasionally attending community events and contributing to Aboriginal Quitline social marketing and resources
  • Adhere to privacy and confidentiality legislation

All about you

We are looking for someone with:

  • Demonstrated practical experience in a relevant health-related field within a community health care setting, with experience talking to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal clients about relevant health issues
  • Knowledge and understanding of social, emotional, health, wellbeing and cultural issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • Excellent verbal communication, customer service and active listening skills, as well as being competent in cultural awareness and displaying empathy and compassion
  • Ability to handle situations with cultural sensitivity, confidence, tact and patience, whilst maintaining confidentiality
  • For a permanent working from home position, you are required to have a stable internet connection with download and upload speeds of 20mbps and 10mbps

This part-time (0.6FTE) position to 31 December 2023 provides a full-time equivalent salary within range $36,856 – $40,789 pa (pro-rata of the FTE salary of $61,427 – $67,982) plus superannuation, annual leave loading and the benefits of not-for-profit salary packaging and a meal entertainment card. We also offer a supportive and friendly work environment.
