The Prevention Division aims to reduce the risk of cancer in the Victorian population through social marketing, advocacy, professional education and providing advice based on the best available evidence. This involves action to affect individual behaviours and the broader physical and legislative environment to support health and wellbeing.

With the aim to achieve equitable outcomes for all Victorians, the Screening, Early Detection and Immunisation (SEDI) program works in partnership with stakeholders to deliver community-based programs, innovative media and communications activities and engages with the primary care and workforce sector to deliver training and education to support participation in cancer screening, early detection (with a particular focus on viral hepatitis-related liver cancer) and HPV immunisation.

About your opportunity

We are seeking an Aboriginal Community Engagement Coordinator to join the Prevention Division. Reporting to the Community Engagement Lead, your role is to:

  • Develop and implement innovative strategies to increase Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community/organisations’ contact with Cancer Council programs and services.
  • Work with Cancer Council’s evaluation team to implement appropriate evaluation measures for community projects, initiatives and research opportunities.
  • In collaboration with Cancer Council’s Strategic Advisor, Partnerships & Programs, provide guidance and support on Aboriginal health issues to assist other Cancer Council programs addressing Aboriginal communities
  • Ensure the Aboriginal programs stakeholder database is regularly updated and accurately maintained.

All about you

We are looking for someone with:

  • Experience developing, implementing and evaluating community health programs and promotional activities with community groups and networks, preferably targeting the Victorian Aboriginal community.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of Victorian Aboriginal communities, community control and self-determination principles.
  • High level organisational skills with the ability to coordinate multiple projects concurrently.
  • Proven ability to develop positive working relationships with colleagues, community and health professionals.
