About Climate and Health Alliance

Climate and Health Alliance (CAHA) is the national peak body on climate change and health in Australia. A coalition of more than 60 health groups, representing more than 500,000 health and medical professionals, CAHA’s mission is to build a powerful health sector movement for climate action and sustainable healthcare.

Our vision is for the health sector to play a leading role in restoring a safe climate, and an ecologically sustainable, just and healthy world.

Our core strategies are to:

  2. Build public support by communicating climate health impacts.
  3. Advocate for national and global action on the climate health emergency.
  4. Support the health sector to cut emissions and build climate health resilience.

CAHA is an incorporated association and registered charity based in Melbourne with national operations and international partnerships. It has a small team of dedicated staff (approximately 5.0 FTE) leading operations, projects and campaigns.

About the Role

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will lead the development and delivery of CAHA’s vision and strategy, at a unique time in the organisation’s ten-year history as the successful candidate takes over leadership from the founding Executive Director.

Reporting to an active and committed Board, the CEO will be an empathetic and strategic leader, a highly effective communicator and persuasive fundraiser, with the networks and capacity to deliver on CAHA’s ambitious goals. The CEO will have demonstrated experience with organisational and business planning and a drive to diversify CAHA’s revenue streams. The CEO will work closely with and be supported by the Founder as Strategic Projects Director.

About the Responsibilities

  1. Leading, managing and growing a non-profit – managing the organisation competently with a view to growing the organisation, its scale and impact; raising and allocating resources efficiently in line with organisational priorities and the strategic plan.
  2. Fundraising – managing existing donor relationships, developing new major donor relationships and creating and developing new funding streams.
  3. Finances - oversee the management of the organisation’s finances including planning, budgeting and income development to ensure the ongoing financial security of the organisation, including working with the bookkeeper to produce financial statements and accountant on annual audit.
  4. Governance - responsible for reporting to the board on the execution of the Strategic Plan and progress towards key results in the Annual Plan, developing proposals and recommendations for the Board, ensuring the organisation complies all relevant laws and regulations, and maintaining positive working relationships with all Board members.
  5. Membership - managing key relationships and communications with existing members, supporting and encouraging membership growth and engagement.
  6. Strategic planning and delivery – designing effective strategies to create the impact envisioned in our theory of change, and further developing and delivering our Strategic Plan to deliver on our mission, goals and key results outlined in the Annual Plan.
  7. Managing staff and volunteers – the CEO will be responsible for recruitment, performance management, salaries, professional and personal development, and team wellbeing.
  8. Media - acting as the organisation’s spokesperson or representative in the media and public forums and providing leadership and direction regarding communication of the organisation’s vision and mission.
  9. Building relationships and the movement – managing existing partnerships and stakeholder relationships, and building new ones, including with philanthropy, business, local, state/territory and federal government, and people and organisations in the climate-health movement (national and international).

About You (Core Competencies)

  1. You are strategic and forward-thinking and have the ability to see the big picture and identify creative ways to solve problems. You are comfortable taking calculated risks in pursuit of impact.
  2. You are empathetic with strong emotional intelligence. You are skilled at internal and external relationship building and stakeholder engagement.
  3. You have previous CEO, Director or senior management experience and a proven track record in leadership roles, including in leading and managing high-performing teams.
  4. You have significant professional fundraising experience in testing and growing a variety of revenue streams, including experience with major donors, grant writing and digital fundraising. You are confident in making asks of donors and other stakeholders and are highly persuasive.
  5. You have experience with financial management, including budgeting and reporting.
  6. You will be able to confidently and articulately express CAHA’s vision and strategy. You are a skilled written and verbal communicator, able to inspire others and communicate effectively with a diverse audience of both internal and external stakeholders.
  7. You have a strong knowledge of climate policy issues and the associated political context and are driven by a commitment to find solutions to the climate crisis.

Key relationships

The CEO reports to the Board and will work closely with the Strategic Projects Director. Direct reports include: Sustainable Healthcare Program Manager, Campaigns and Communications Officer, Projects Officer, Policy and Advocacy Manager, and Office Manager.

Hours, Location and Salary

We would prefer the CEO be full time, but will consider a flexible working arrangement for the right candidate. Location is Melbourne preferred but consideration will be given to outstanding candidates based in other locations. The salary is $120,600 inclusive of 10% superannuation, with future increases negotiable commensurate with skills and experience.
