Summary

  • Classification: Level 5 Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 and Salary Packaging Available. 6 month probationary period applies.
  • Work location: Primarily based in Caboolture and Redcliffe as well as required to work across the Moreton Bay Region and other locations as directed.
  • Employment status: Permanent up to 9 day fortnight role. This position is subject to funding availability.
  • Accountability: The position is responsible to and takes directions from the Team Leader or designated supervisor and the CADA CEO

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Child, Young People and Families Counsellor will support and promote the safety and wellbeing of children and young persons (aged 0– 17 years) who are affected by domestic and family violence and includes promotion and development of early intervention strategies that address inter-generational domestic violence. This position will also provide community education and interagency cooperation to work towards the elimination of domestic and family violence.

To utilise a feminist philosophy in addressing domestic and family violence through the provision of safe, accessible and appropriate support services and prevention education within our community.

CADA OBJECTIVES

  1. To provide physical, emotional, psychological support for all victims of domestic and family violence and provide a referral service for perpetrators within the Moreton Bay Region and surrounds.
  2. To initiate community education programs to improve community awareness of Domestic and Family Violence and related issues, with particular regard to Domestic Violence legislation and misconceptions surrounding the social and political beliefs about Domestic Violence.
  3. To encourage acknowledgment by the community of the criminality of domestic and family violence by focusing on the social, emotional and economic ramifications for both victims/survivors and the wider community.
  4. To research, develop and implement preventative and responsive strategies to Domestic and Family Violence within the Moreton Bay Region.
  5. To nurture and develop support networks relevant to victims and advocate on behalf of victims/survivors to facilitate their access to other services.
  6. To advocate for the establishment and maintenance of emergency and crisis services within the Moreton Bay Region.
  7. To advocate and facilitate an integrated response to Domestic and Family Violence by all agencies (Government and non-government) within the Moreton Bay Region.

Objective of the position

The Children, Young People and Families Counsellor will provide counselling and support to children and young people who are affected by Domestic and Family Violence. This position will promote and develop early intervention strategies that address intergenerational Domestic Violence and provide community education regarding Domestic and Family Violence.

Working Hours

Usually 9am-5pm Monday to Friday, except public holidays. Additional hours may be required on occasions to allow for travel/events etc.

Qualification

Possession of a tertiary qualification in Social Sciences, Social Work, Psychology, Behaviour Science, or related field and demonstrated experience working with children and young people in a counselling environment (minimum 2 years).

Duties and Responsibilities

To provide specialist face to face counselling for children and young people who have experienced or are experiencing Domestic and Family Violence

  • To facilitate and coordinate therapeutic and psycho-educational groups for children and young people who have witnessed or been exposed to Domestic and Family Violence
  • To facilitate parent/carer groups and or work individually with parents/carers to enhance their parenting skills and assist them to build healthy, positive and safe relationships with their children and partners
  • To develop appropriate referral networks including with schools, police, legal services, health and counselling/support agencies and provide advocacy, referral and crisis intervention
  • Support and contribute to CADAs’ community education and interagency co-operation regarding Domestic and Family Violence within the region
  • Maintain appropriate records and statistical data as required by funding bodies and contribute to the activity reports
  • Other duties as directed by the CEO or designated supervisor

Organisational Responsibilities

Comply with CADA policies and procedures

  • Maintain accurate client records and other data as required by CADA and funding body
  • Work cooperatively and supportively as a member of a team to achieve the smooth and effective functioning of the Service and the achievement of organisational and client goals
  • Assist with the development of appropriate written resources in relation to the Domestic and Family Violence issues and prevention
  • Participate in CADA events, staff supervision, staff meetings, team building activities
  • Assist in the development and facilitation of community education and training to raise awareness of Domestic and Family Violence issues and to increase the capacity of the community and other workers in the region in responding to Domestic and Family violence

Requirements

Must inform CADA of any domestic and family violence applications or orders naming them as respondent (current or in the past)

  • Blue card for Working with Children (Queensland)
  • Current Queensland Driver’s Licence
  • High level Computer literacy (particularly with Excel)
  • Certified copies of qualifications
  • Three (3) work related referees
  • Certified copies of any other pertinent documents required to meet Service Standards as defined by funding body

Selection Criteria

  1. Tertiary qualification relevant to the position and significant demonstrated experience of in early intervention and primary prevention of domestic and family violence. This will include a working knowledge and understanding of the Queensland Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012 and the dynamics of Domestic and Family Violence.
  2. Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge of innovative therapeutic intervention practices with children and young people particularly those who have experienced or witnessed Domestic Violence.
  3. Demonstrated ability to facilitate group work with children and young people including therapeutic, psycho-educational, community education and/or training.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and as a member of a team to address the needs of children and families experiencing Domestic and Family Violence.
  5. Well-developed interpersonal skills (both verbal and written) including high levels of computer literacy
  6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and sensitively with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and a sound knowledge and understanding of both cultures and societies and the issues which impact upon them in contemporary society
