Cabrini Outreach is a Catholic community development organisation inspired by the spirit and vision of Mother Cabrini and the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Our mandate is to seek social justice, alleviate social inequality and enable better healthcare for people seeking asylum and people experiencing place-based intergenerational disadvantage within Australia and overseas.

We are seeking a mental health clinician who is passionate about working with people seeking asylum to join our Asylum Seeker and Refugee Health Program. Our primary target groups are people seeking asylum who are Medicare-ineligible and those who have Medicare but limited or no income. We provide integrated primary care, mental health care and a health waiver program from our Hub in Brunswick. The innovative Specialist Mental Health Service has a multidisciplinary team with psychiatry, clinical psychology and mental health clinicians. Our focus has been on people living in the north and west of Melbourne and we are now in the process of expanding access to people living in regional Victoria.

The Role

The role involves mental health triage, assessments and planning, provision of direct support, counselling and therapeutic intervention, care coordination and referral to other services according to the needs of the individual and families. This role is full-time although part-time will be considered.

Professional Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA); and Post Graduate Diploma studies in Psychiatric/mental health nursing or equivalent – nurses must have completed either a specialist undergraduate psychiatric nursing program or a specialist post basic course of training which led to registration as a Division 3 nurse; or
  • Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Applied Science (Social Work) or a Master of Social Work; and current registration (as appropriate) or eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW); or
  • Approved qualification in Occupational Therapy and registered with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA); or
  • Registered as a psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA); and eligible for membership of the Australian Psychological Society (APS)
  • Post-entry/post graduate qualification in mental health (preferable).

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years post registration and experience in mental health.
  • Significant clinical experience working in a community setting.
  • Previous experience working with people seeking asylum and refugees highly desirable.
