We’re looking for an experienced communications leader who wants to join our 2,000+ team of staff and volunteers to make a difference.

The role

Reporting to the Director of Marketing & Engagement, the Head of Communications is responsible for the development and implementation of the communications strategy for BSL, with a focus on ‘owned’ and ‘earned’ channels.

In this role, you will help raise the consciousness of the public on the issues of poverty, increase public awareness of BSL and its work in the community, as well as help grow positive sentiment and supporter engagement.  

You will lead a team of communications professionals across a range of communications specialisations, including media relations, PR, publicity, internal communications, events, social media and publications, and work closely with a number of stakeholders to create effective and integrated communications activity.

To be considered for the role and be successful in it, we’re looking for an experienced communications professional who has, amongst other capabilities, the following key skills and experiences

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in communications, public relations, media relations or related field
  • A strong leader with extensive experience and success in a similar senior level role, leading a high-performance Communications team with a broad range of disciplines and in an issues-rich environment, across a broad portfolio of products/services/departments
  • Experience and demonstrated success working with key stakeholders to input into, create and drive integrated communications and campaign efforts.
  • Experience in the government and policy landscape relating to the community sector, and experience working collaboratively with policy and advocacy teams
  • Strong existing relationships with relevant media, with demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with media/reporters/editors, and in successfully working with the media to achieve high-impact outcomes.
  • Extensive knowledge of traditional and digital media platforms
  • Ability to craft strategy anew, and move between strategy and execution with ease
  • Strong project management capability, and the ability to lead a cross-functional team to deliver
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with excellent positioning and influencing skills
  • Outstanding creative and innovation skills, with the ability to clearly articulate concepts
  • Experienced and competent acting as a media-facing spokesperson, and ability to deal with sensitive media / crisis communication appropriately
  • Strong enterprise leadership mindset, collaborative team-based approach  
  • Passion and understanding for social justice
  • Ability to travel interstate and work irregular hours, when required

This is an excellent opportunity to build the communications strategy and promote the work of this organisation.  This is a full-time position, with head office based in Fitzroy.

Salary Range: Competitive salary package on offer dependent on skills and experience.
