Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary and the Bonorong Wildlife Hospital are a social enterprise with a focus on animal welfare, wildlife and the environment. We have a publicly accessible Wildlife Sanctuary, which helps us to fund the vital community service of a responsive 24/7 wildlife rescue hotline and functioning wildlife hospital. We have a friendly, passionate and focused workplace culture (and have comfy uniforms! ).
Bonorong’s Wildlife Rescue service is constantly getting busier. In fact, last year we had over 14,000 calls to our 24/7 public rescue hotline requesting support for wildlife all around Tasmania.
Our Wildlife Rescue Coordinators receive phone calls directly from our 24 hour rescue hotline and offer advice and assistance specific to each situation. The rescue phone staff members coordinate an amazing group of around 1000 active Bonorong rescue volunteers across the state of Tasmania, making additional calls as needed to resolve the situation, whilst balancing receiving wildlife directly dropped at Bonorong.
Those answering the calls for assistance to wildlife play a crucial role in getting fast, effective and helpful service to our native animals in need, and we are looking for additional staff in our rescue team!
The Role is for multiple casual positions (exact number depends on available hours of candidates).
Shifts cover 24 hours a day. All shifts are undertaken on site. Shifts can occur on any of the 7 days in a week. They include:
Day shifts commencing at 7am finishing at 3pm or 4pm
Dusk shifts commencing at 3pm or 4pm and finish at 10pm or 12am
Overnight shifts which start at 12am and finish at 7am.
There are always at least two staff working in the office together during the day and dusk shifts. Dusk shifts also involve cleaning duties in the park in between calls (e.g. cleaning resident animal enclosures).
We are looking to fill dusk and overnight shifts, but would also have a few day shifts available. Please let us know in your cover letter if you would like to apply to work dusk/night shifts OR a combination of day, dusk and night shifts. Particular interest will be given to those who show a preference for dusk/night shifts as there is a greater need to cover these shifts.
You must be available for a minimum of 2 shifts per week, of which at least one must be a dusk/night shift. Ideally you will be available to do more than the minimum available hours to cover staff shortages/leave as they arise.
Training will be required on commencement of 2-3 days per week for the first three weeks (likely to be 4 hours per day between the hours of 7am and 5pm Monday-Sunday).
Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary is based in Brighton - around 30 minutes north of Hobart CBD. It is essential that you have your own reliable transport to get to and from work.
Please note these roles have minimum contact with animals. If you are looking to work with animals more directly then keep an eye open for the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary keeper roles.
An order of merit will be created from this recruitment process, and will be used as new positions arrive over the following 12 months within the rescue phone team.
