Banyule Community Health is seeking to employ an enthusiastic and highly skilled First Nations Counsellor to provide therapeutic support and counselling to the local First Nations community.

The First Nations Counsellor is responsible for assessing clients and delivering focused psychological strategies using culturally appropriate, evidence-based therapeutic modalities, appropriate referral, working within a defined scope of practice.

The role sits in a multidisciplinary team with a social worker, and First Nations Outreach Worker and has easy access to credentialed mental health nurses, non-clinical care coordinators and peer support workers, aim of making community based mental health care accessible and culturally relevant to First Nations peoples. Services may be delivered at CH service locations, the client's home, other community settings.

The key responsibilities for this position include:

  • Provide a comprehensive psychological assessment for clients
  • Deliver a range of person centred, strengths-focussed and evidence based therapeutic interventions, in a culturally sensitive manner, for individuals, groups and families of eligible First Nations clients.
  • Work with First Nations Social Worker and Outreach Worker or other relevant staff to develop an appropriate support plan and ensure that First Nations community members feel safe, connected and supported at BCH
  • Manage a caseload plus administrative duties including completing client documentation and case notes on the day of client contact
  • Collect statistical data and prepare service reports to management as required

The key skills required for this role include:

  • Deep understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and their experiences of health and support systems
  • Ability to build a therapeutic alliance with First Nations clients and assist them towards their goals in a client centred and flexible manner
  • Demonstrated skills in assessment and treatment interventions including clinical risk assessment and management and working with trauma and addiction.
  • Highly developed skills in client centred care and integrated treatment planning
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a client case load and to respond flexibly and in a timely fashion to clients' needs
  • At least 2 years' experience working within health and welfare settings

Banyule Community Health has two main sites, one in the heart of West Heidelberg and the other near the train station of Greensborough. The Community Programs Team provides a range of services, including Aboriginal health, prevention and health promotion projects and chronic disease related programs.
