ABOUT BEFRIEND

Since its launch ten years ago, Befriend has grown to become one of Perth’s leading change agents in the space of relationships and inclusion. Our grassroots community development initiatives have supported connection for over 10,000 West Australians, and our work in partnership with citizens, community organisations, researchers and government is changing the conversation around loneliness, isolation and social exclusion. We’re riding the wave of 2020, building on the groundswell of citizen-led action to spark connected communities.

ABOUT THE TEAM

We are a small but mighty team of community builders, consultants and change agents, trusting and supporting each other to work autonomously and make informed decisions. We are avid learners, experimenters, collaborators and do-ers. We aspire to develop Befriend as a radically-inclusive, participatory organisation that values the contributions of all, and acts with intention to create spaces for autonomy, connection, growth and fun!

THIS ROLE IN A NUTSHELL

  • Support an existing network of 20-30 Canning residents with their community- connecting efforts (such as social groups, community volunteering and neighbourhood development projects)
  • Facilitate points of connection between residents and the City of Canning to enable access to the information, resources and support needed to help bring community-led enrichment ideas to life
  • Work in partnership with the City to grow the Community Connector network
  • Develop partnerships and referral pathways with local community service organisations that support people at risk of social isolation

WE EXPECT THIS WILL INCLUDE:

  • Building relationships with Community Connectors, City staff and organisations who’ve been working on this project since April.
  • Identifying and engaging with community members who have an interest in running grassroots social/community groups, activities or neighbourhood development projects
  • Facilitation of small-group workshops and community conversations with local residents to identify ways they can take action to connect people in their local area
  • Providing support to residents to develop their confidence & capabilities to take local action
  • Attending community events and activities to support residents taking action
  • Attending networking meetings with local services, information provision and establishment of referral pathways
  • Connecting residents with others in their local area, and helping them form as teams
  • Collecting data and stories of connection arising from the resident-led activities

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS ROLE, YOU’LL HAVE:

  • A passion for developing, supporting and coaching local people to be active contributors to the connectedness and wellbeing of their neighbourhoods
  • A supportive leader who helps others develop their confidence and skills to bring their ideas to life
  • Experience running and/or supporting a social/community group or neighbourhood development projects
  • An understanding of social isolation and the barriers to social inclusion
  • High level of proficiency with email, Microsoft Office Suite and social media
  • Excellent time management, ability to juggle competing priorities & work autonomously
  • National Police Clearance
  • And of course, be inclusive of people from all walks of life

IT WOULD ALSO BE GREAT IF YOU HAVE:

  • Experience living, working and playing in the Canning area
  • Relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in the community sector
  • Knowledge of Asset-Based Community Development principles

POSITION DETAILS

  • Part-time position (0.45 FTE) immediate start – June 2021 with possibility of extension in accordance with project continuation
  • Salary $61,800 pro rata plus superannuation
