Project Manager - Laboratory Information Management System implementation

Beyond Essential Systems

A bit about us...

Here at Beyond Essential Systems (BES) we make awesome technology and put it to good use in the world. Our aim is to improve decision making in low resource settings by providing meaningful data that results in well informed decisions, and better outcomes for individuals. Our services and products have impact across health, education, supply chain and disaster management, and we are proud to be able to provide innovative and collaborative solutions, while working closely with local partners in the Asia / Pacific region.

About the role

Our team is growing! As a Project Manager in the BES team, you’ll be working on projects that directly impact our overall mission. Our software suite includes Tupaia and Tamanu and we also implement and support mSupply, DHIS2 and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) systems.

Currently, our team is advancing our software to support laboratory strengthening for vulnerable populations in the Pacific, with a focus (though not exclusively) on clinical laboratories and microbiology. This includes the implementation of an open-source LIMS called SENAITE, which forms part of an eHealth ecosystem that we support. SENAITE has modules for all clinical departments, biobanking and public health.

This role will support the implementation of SENAITE, with potential peripheral support to our other software solutions (Tupaia, Tamanu, mSupply and DHIS2). The role will include a substantial amount of in-country travel, particularly within the Pacific region. The job is likely to involve approximately 75% travel outside Australia with first travel to commence after approximately 4 weeks of on-boarding.

Experience with SENAITE is not necessary – complete training will be provided.

Day to day, you will:

  • Implement SENAITE software, including requirements gathering, training, change management and provide at-the-elbow implementation across the Pacific and elsewhere as reasonably requested
  • Support the development of laboratory workflows and editing of SOPs to align with digitisation as necessary
  • Liaise with partner countries and organisations, including report writing, presentations, product promotion and meetings
  • Support the Tamanu and Tupaia and BES products and services in the Pacific and elsewhere
  • Ensure compliance with policies (including Child Protection Policy) and fiduciary responsibilities in the carrying out of contracts
  • Provide software demonstrations and trainings as required on BES and related software, including SENAITE, Tamanu, Tupaia, mSupply and DHIS2
  • Attend meetings and conferences on behalf of BES
  • Other duties as reasonably requested

About you

You’ll have a real connection with our purpose and will be looking for a role where your work has a meaningful influence and impact on the lives of others. You’ll be a natural collaborator with initiative and drive.

Ideally, you’ll have experience in:

  • Experience working in complex and dynamic roles across health, or health technology projects in either a clinical or health system management capacity
  • Experience in a clinical or public health laboratory
  • Experience using a LIMS or other eHealth solutions
  • Experience in low resource settings
  • Experience and sensitivity working in culturally diverse settings
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills with the ability to work with individuals from a variety of skillsets (including Project Managers, Health Professionals and Software developers)
  • Resilience working in tough environments, with a high level of autonomy and the ability to solve problems coupled with the ability to recognise when assistance is required and the willingness to ask for that assistance
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • High comfort with and ability to learn new technology
  • Comfortable travelling during current COVID-19 pandemic restrictions (with approval from Department of Home Affairs and in-country government partners)
  • Relevant qualifications

Having familiarity with data management or work experience in the Pacific would also be an advantage (but not required).

What’s in it for you?

Where do we start! As well as being part of key projects and having meaningful work, we also offer:

  • genuine work/life balance and flexibility
  • ongoing professional development: you decide where to take your career
  • a talented, collaborative, and friendly team to work with
  • an opportunity to work for a recently accredited B Corp company

Right now, we are using a mix of remote and office work, with teams having a nominated office day once a week and the rest is up to you! The office is on Nicholson St in Brunswick East - close to Lygon Street with its Cafés, restaurants and bars - and there is a big park just behind our building. We would especially encourage you to apply if you are from a community that’s underrepresented in the technology or aid industry.
