BEING is the independent, NSW peak organisation for people with lived/living experience of mental health issues and emotional distress. Our primary focus is to ensure the voices of people with mental health issues are heard by decision makers, service providers, and the community.

With a long-standing history of operation, BEING is in a unique position to influence NSW policy, legislation, and service delivery, to improve the outcomes for the communities we serve by providing advice to the mental health sector on people’s views and experiences of the way mental health services are delivered. We support people to advocate and provide input into decision making at all levels through a co-design process and peer–led activities.

BEING has a strong focus on human rights, and as such advocate for the rights of people with mental health issues and emotional distress to live and participate in the communities they choose. We are a value-based organisation whose work is underpinned by Recovery-Oriented and Trauma-Informed principles including respect, social justice, and transparency, and a belief that recovery is possible for every individual. BEING engages with their members, Government, Community Managed Organisations, and the community through the provision of resources and information, consultations and submissions, research and evaluation, and education and training.

About the Role

The Marketing and Communications Officer is responsible for the implementation of BEING’s Communications and Media plans, strategies and policies, including website and social media interactions with members, supporters, government, media, and other key stakeholders to ensure effective, targeted and credible messaging and branding of our organisation.

The role requires someone who is flexible and adaptive to the changing pace of the organisation and is a highly motivated professional in their field.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Together with the Project and Operations Manager, create, coordinate, and execute a cross platform marketing and communications strategy.
  • Create coordinate and execute communications and marketing material in line with Marketing and Communications Strategy, Stakeholder Engagement Plan, and Brand Guidelines.
  • Research develop and pitch innovative, engaging and informative content to maximise brand awareness.
  • Develop a consistent high standard of accurate and engaging content, including media releases, opinion pieces, public statements, and other key and feature messages.
  • Develop, monitor, and evaluate member communication, including coordinating and developing content for newsletters, survey’s, event invitations and other communication materials.
  • Maintain and develop templates and contact lists for communications in Mailchimp and other distribution platforms.
  • Assist in managing BEING’s database of members, media, and broader stakeholders through an integrated contacts management system.
  • Coordinate and manage BEING’s website and online material, including establishing events on the website, uploading reports, and posting to social media.
  • Assist with event management for external BEING events, workshops, and/or technical support with hosting webinars and online events.
  • Create, coordinate, and execute cross platform communication strategies.
  • Manage relationships with external stakeholders, including members, supporters, funding bodies, media, contractors, and suppliers.
  • Develop facilitate and monitor awareness campaigns as required.
  • Other duties as required.

Essential Criteria:

  1. Personal experience of living with mental health issues and demonstrated ability to utilise your own recovery to support and inspire hope and recovery for others.
  2. Tertiary or Vocational Qualifications in Media, Journalism, Communications, Marketing or Public Relations.
  3. Ability to be flexible, adaptive, and proactive, and agile to the changing needs of the organisation and working within tight timeframes.
  4. Experience in developing clear and engaging content for publications such as newsletters, surveys, annual reports.
  5. Experience in a professional capacity in writing for online platforms and website content management systems.
  6. Ability to establish and maintain positive and constructive relationships, and experience working with varied stakeholders including government departments, and media outlets.
  7. Strong writing skills including a proven ability to write media briefings and content for online/social media channels, website, and printed resources.
  8. Demonstrated experience with content management systems in the delivery and maintenance of website and e-Newsletters, and social media.
  9. Demonstrated experience in managing websites including monitoring performance, trends and reporting using web analytics tools and a good knowledge of principles of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).
  10. Strong planning, organising, time management and problem-solving skills.
  11. High level of computer literacy including Microsoft Office software.

Desirable Criteria:

  1. Experience with print production processes.
  2. Experience with graphic design and basic video editing.
  3. Experience working with the Media.
  4. Knowledge of the mental health sector in NSW.
  5. Experience with state or national level Peer Workforce initiatives.
