About the Role:

The primary purpose of this position is to provide a high level of management and coordination for the Black Dog Institute’s school-based research trials working closely to support the Senior Project Manager, alongside other team members working on the coordination of the various projects.

The Research Officer will have a supporting role in school recruitment, project coordination and the implementation of a number of Black Dog Institute’s secondary school based research trials, such as ‘Future Proofing’, ‘Smooth Sailing’ and ‘BEAM’.

The role requires excellent communication skills, the ability to on-board schools onto the research project, experience in digital mental health platforms, experience in attending schools and facilitating research visits, experience or training in clinical or counselling psychology to assist with risk management during school visits, and be able to work coherently as part of a large team

Key Duties:

  • Travel within the Sydney area and to regional areas across the state (and on occasion interstate) as various projects require.
  • Determine, implement, and monitor research and development strategies, policies, and plans
  • Support the preparation of ethics modifications and applications, including to UNSW, government, independent and Catholic school ethics committees.
  • Provide support to the research design process including preparation of research protocols, conducting comprehensive reviews.
  • Contribute to the publishing of results of the studies in a range of academic and non-academic outputs.
  • Collate and organise data for the projects from the IT platform and oversee data collection activities, including administration of project questionnaires.
  • Interpret study results and accordingly providing recommendations and advice regarding the implementation of the program/s.
  • Respond to requests for information on the projects, organise committee meetings, agendas, and minutes.
  • Support the testing of IT components of the projects, as required.
  • Modify components of the digital mental health research platform of the school-based projects, as required.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders (including the Investigators, the Internal Management Committee) and external stakeholders (Schools, school counsellors, school psychologists) with vested interests to ensure each trial’s successful completion.
  • Undertake extensive community liaison with key agencies critical to research implementation, including school principals, staff, parents, and students, and manage study promotion and school recruitment to the studies.
  • Provide accurate and timely reports on research data as requested and contribute to the dissemination of results.

About You:

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • An honours degree in Psychology or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in coordinating and conducting mental health research projects.
  • A minimum of 1-year research experience working with teachers and/or schools and working in e-health and digital technology.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience or training in clinical or counselling psychology to assist with risk management and school counsellor followup.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to consult, liaise and negotiate with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders to build collaborative relationships.
  • Demonstrated experience in research studies, including participant recruitment and implementation, ethics applications, and preparation of reports and/or other publications.
  • Strong computing skills including experience in the Microsoft Office programs Excel and Word, experience with database management and data analysis using SPSS or similar packages, and familiarity with Smartphone usage (iOS and/or Android operating systems).
  • A knowledge of EEO principles and OH&S responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant OH&S training.
  • A valid working with Children Check or the eligibility to obtain one upon employment offer

Desirable

  • A relevant postgraduate degree in Psychology or a related discipline.
  • Prior written contribution to the academic literature.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team, to prioritise, meet deadlines and see projects through to completion.
  • Excellent time management and organisation skills with a proven ability to deal with multiple tasks; establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • A current and valid driver’s license.
