About the Role:

The Research and Policy Officer will provide research assistance and high level support to the Chief Scientist of the Black Dog Institute, as well as the broader Policy and Advocacy Working Group, and where appropriate to other teams. They will support the Chief Scientist in synthesising and translating research into policy and practice recommendations for governments and advocating for evidence-based policy in mental health and suicide prevention. This position holder will primarily support the team in ongoing literature scanning, synthesising and translating relevant research, and assisting in producing policy outputs, including evidence briefs, position statements and other papers.

Key Duties:

  • Support the Policy and Advocacy working group by undertaking research, critically analysing policy, drafting submissions and other communications, assisting with referencing, and assisting in implementing Black Dog Institute’s policy and advocacy strategy.
  • Undertake regular literature and environmental scans regarding mental health and suicide prevention research, programs, organisations, and government policy, maintaining awareness of current policy landscape and identify potential areas for change.
  • Provide research support and assistance to the Chief Scientist, including preparation of research and evaluation protocols, undertaking literature searches, conducting comprehensive reviews, and preparation of ethics applications, and reports.
  • Provide support for the planning and preparation of manuscripts and presentations, data management and analysis, and the preparation of grant proposals and submissions.
  • Assist with maintaining up to date records for all publications, conferences attendances and presentations, projects, and grants.
  • Assist with the preparation and dissemination of research material, including reporting related to Black Dog Institute Annual Reports, evaluation related reports and other requested reporting.

About You:

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • A tertiary degree with honours in psychology, public health, public policy, social science, or a related discipline
  • Minimum 2-years’ experience in a research translation setting, preferably in mental health or public health
  • Minimum 2-years’ experience to rapidly review and synthesise academic research literature, government documents, reports, and other material
  • Highly advanced written and verbal communication skills, with a strong demonstrated capability of writing for diverse range of audiences
  • Excellent analytical skills, with the capacity to comprehend complex ideas quickly
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop and build positive relationships
  • Demonstrated organisational and time management skills, and the capacity to work independently and as part of a team
  • Knowledge of equal opportunity principles 9. Knowledge of OHS responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant OHS training

Desirable

  • Working towards a Postgraduate qualification in psychology, public health, public policy, social science, or a related discipline
  • Interest and/or previous experience in public policy highly desirable
  • Record of publication and impact in relevant area
