About the Role:

The Major Gifts Manager plays a key strategic role in supporting the implementation and promotion of a range of major giving initiatives to grow fundraising income and expand support of BDI’s programs.

This role is responsible for deepening relationships with major donors and funding partners, through a variety of contact mechanisms and development of a strategy for the major gifts portfolio. The role is also responsible for research and identification of prospective high net worth individuals and families, toward building long term relationships to grow major financial support for the Institute.

This is a relationship-based role, requiring a high degree of emotional intelligence, tact, compassion, empathy and professionalism, as well as an ability to inspire support for the Black Dog Institute.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support a pro-active Major Gifts Program to significantly grow tied and untied income for Black Dog Institute.
  • Support the Philanthropy and Major Gifts Senior Manager and Director, Fundraising and Development, in the stewardship of high value donors, including foundations and in building new relationships.
  • Identify BDI’s current (and past) major donors and develop appropriate engagement strategies, tailored communications and ongoing stewardship for each, to grow their financial commitment to BDI.
  • Work with Fundraising and Development Team to ensure opportunities to engage major donors in broader fundraising activities, campaigns and appeals are optimised.
  • Guide the Major Gifts Officer in researching high net worth individuals, families, philanthropists and foundations, ensuring the development and tracking of a prospective donor’s pipeline.
  • Actively grow Black Dog’s income from trusts and foundations (T&Fs), through strategic relationship management, tailored communications and ongoing stewardship.
  • Research, develop and manage relationships to expand T&F portfolio and create a pipeline of grant opportunities.
  • Keep up to date with BDI’s work, programs and funding priorities and be a key conduit to establishing funding priorities and ensuring key programs are funded.
  • Collaborate with the Corporate Partnerships team in development of proposals & pitches to corporate foundation and in engaging high value corporates’ senior executives as an extension of the Major Gifts program.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Essential Criteria

  • 4+ years’ experience in successful major gift fundraising and high value asks, or extensive experience in business development or B2B sales.
  • An established track record in writing successful funding applications and proposals.
  • Track record in achieving revenue targets and income growth.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including public speaking and presenting.
  • Superb interpersonal skills and a proven ability to develop genuine long-term relationships with a wide range of stakeholders to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
  • A high level of professionalism, ethics and integrity.
  • High attention to detail and a sound ability to think critically and strategically.
  • Confidence to make cold calls and unsolicited approaches to prospective donors.
  • Willing to travel interstate as needed and ability to work outside business hours occasionally.
  • Alignment to Black Dog Institute’s work, mission and values.

Desirable Criteria

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent in marketing, fundraising, or business.
  • Experience in the not for profit sector and a commitment to fundraising as a profession.
  • Some event management experience.
  • Blackbaud NXT and Raisers Edge Knowledge are a plus
