Visual Arts Outreach Manager – Position & background story

Barkly Regional Arts (BRA) is seeking a dynamic and visionary manager for its Visual Arts Outreach Program (VAOP). BRA is a renowned leader in Australian Community Arts, energising arts from a robust multi-cultural community including 16 Indigenous language groups. It provides an impressive range of arts projects through the Visual Arts Outreach Program.

BRA works across the Barkly region covering 320,000 square kilometres. The organisation’s headquarters are in Tennant Creek, 500 kilometres north of Alice Springs. While directly operating in a further 5 remote communities Canteen Creek Artists (Owairtilla) – Kulumindini Arts (Elliott) – Epenarra Artists (Wutunugurra) – Mungkarta Artists (McLaren Creek) -Tartukula Artists (Tennant Creek).

The Barkly region has approximately 70% Indigenous population and more than half of the region is held under Aboriginal Freehold title. Many Aboriginal people in the Barkly continue to reside on their traditional lands and retain strong connections to country, law and culture. The Barkly’s health status and social dysfunction have been well publicised.

BRA operates in an extremely challenging environment to deliver Visual Arts initiatives of excellence. The Visual Arts Outreach Program empowers remote Indigenous artists to pursue their arts and cultural practise in their home communities, lead by Indigenous staff in remote visual art centres.

BRA is significant not only in its artistic and creative impacts but it also “..plays a vital role in strengthening community connectedness, social inclusion, and community and regional identity, as well as providing opportunities for economic development’ (Creative Barkly: Sustaining the Arts and Creative Sector in Remote Australia; B. Bartleet, Naomi Sunderland, S. O’Sullivan, S. Woodland, Queensland Conservatorium Research Centre, 2019).

Barkly Regional Arts is a unique organisation consistently achieving life sustaining and life changing arts outcomes, located in one of the most remote and challenging environments on earth.
