Youth Justice and Community Support Coordinator

Banksia Gardens Community Services

ABOUT BGCS

Established in 1979, Banksia Gardens Community Services (BGCS) is a vibrant community services organisation and registered charity, operating in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. With a strong commitment to community development and action research principles, our innovative programs focus mainly on education and training, young people, early childhood, environmental sustainability, gender equity and community participation and advocacy.

BGCS is committed to advocacy and community development through innovative programs and ideas. We are passionate about supporting our community through opportunities that lead to further education and employment pathways, enhance well-being, transform lives and giving a voice to those who suffer injustice.

POSITION PURPOSE

The BGCS Department of Community Development and Youth consists of approximately 25 highly capable staff who deliver a wide range of place-based community development and youth programs both at Banksia Gardens Community Services in Broadmeadows and at Kenley Court Neighbourhood House in Meadow Heights. Many of these programs are extremely well established and have received state-wide recognition as examples of “best practice”.

An exciting position is available in our Department of Community Development and Youth, leading a small team responsible for implementation of two of our organisation’s key initiatives, the Broadmeadows Community Youth Justice Alliance (BCYJA) and the Banksia Gardens Community Connections (BGCC) programs.

Broadmeadows Community Youth Justice Alliance Project (BCYJA) is a partnership project which works with local young people between the ages of 10 and 24 (predominantly 10-19) at risk of becoming involved with the justice system. It includes the following components:

  • YouthSpace 3047: A hyperlocal, universal, highly targeted pro-social intervention using the existing BGCS programs as a platform.
  • Strategic co-location of essential support services.
  • Various levels of individual support, including support for high recidivist young offenders.

Banksia Gardens Community Connections Project (BGCC) is a place-based community development project which aims to improve health and wellbeing and to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour on the Banksia Gardens Public Housing Estate in Broadmeadows. This estate constitutes a pocket of severe disadvantage within what is already one of Melbourne’s most disadvantaged suburbs.

The Individual Support Coordinator will lead a small team of case managers and community development officers responsible for the coordination, implementation and evaluation of the above-mentioned programs.
