FEMALE, ABORIGINAL-IDENTIFIED POSITION. We are looking for someone amazing: a deadly Aboriginal person who is available to work for about 23 hours per week and provide practical support to three different programs throughout NSW school term 2 and what's left of term 1.

The three programs are: the Kurung Homework Club, which meets after school on Tuesdays; Wirringa and Booris, our program for young mums and their accompanying preschool children, which meets during the school day on Wednesdays; and “Speak Up Sis”, our program for teenage girls, which meets after school on Thursdays and runs until 7.30 p.m.

Baabayn Aboriginal Corporation is an Aboriginal-led community that values culture and connectedness. We are looking for a friendly, approachable, sensitive “people person” who will not just do essential tasks like driving a twelve-seater bus but also be a positive, culturally attuned contributor and role model during the weekly termtime sessions of all three programs.

THIS ROLE:

Part-time, 3 days per week fixed-term position.

Role title: Program Support Worker

Available from 1 March 2021; funded until late June 2021.

We are looking to recruit at Level 3 on the SCHCADS scale.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

  • Transporting program participants in a twelve-seater bus;
  • Catering and food preparation;
  • Building friendly, supportive relationships with the school-age children and teenagers who attend the Homework Club and “Speak Up Sis,” their parents and carers, and the mothers who gather on Wednesdays;
  • Responding appropriately to expressed needs for assistance, e.g. by referring program participants for social-work or counselling support within Baabayn or to external services;
  • Providing direct support to program participants and their families in ways that are within the appointee’s own competence;
  • Supporting the cultural and other learning of program participants;
  • Record keeping and other administrative tasks.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The minimum qualifications and core competencies we will require you to demonstrate in your written application and/or at interview

  1. Successful completion of the HSC and/or directly relevant TAFE qualifications at Certificate III, Certificate IV or Diploma level;
  2. Ability to build rapport with Aboriginal children, adolescents and young adults;
  3. Friendly, approachable, sensitive personality;
  4. Excellent person-to-person communication skills;
  5. A valid, current, clean NSW drivers license;
  6. The confidence to drive a twelve-seater bus;
  7. Adequate academic attainment and IT skills to support students up to year 10 in their learning;
  8. Basic knowledge of food hygiene;
  9. Ability to maintain appropriate records;
  10. Ability to work as a member of a team;
  11. Understanding of the importance of boundaries and the ability to maintain them in a loosely structured work environment;
  12. Understanding of, and commitment to, the principles of work health and safety, cultural safety, and privacy and confidentiality.
