About the assignment

We’re looking for a Laboratory Quality Assurance Mentor who can volunteer remotely (from home) for 3 months. Join the Australian Volunteers Program to contribute to sustainable development across the Solomon Islands.

This assignment is part of the Health Security Corps, which is part of the Australian Government’s Health Security Initiative. Through the Australian Volunteers Program, Health Security Corps volunteers are deployed in non-clinical health roles to build the capacity of partner organisations to prevent, detect and control infectious disease threats across our Indo-Pacific region.

About the Partner Organisation: 

The National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) is an ancillary of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS). It was established in 1978 as part of the Medical Laboratory within the National Referral Hospital. Its mission is to provide quality health laboratory services for Solomon Islands citizens.

The National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) is part of the Enhancing Integrated Framework (EIF) programme under the project ‘Solomon Islands Enhancing Capacities for Agriculture Trade’ (SI- ECAT) of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade. Under the SI – ECAT project, NPHL received laboratory equipment to support their capacity to test and analyse the country’s agricultural products, namely cassava and taro industries.

The project aims to increase the export base and promote value add by strengthening the capacity to monitor and evaluate the microbiological and chemical contamination risks associated with food and water. For an effective implementation of the project goals and to reach international bench mark, NPHL is seeking the assistance of the volunteer with a ISO 17025 – quality assurance experience to support their production tracking, quality control systems and production analysis efficiency.

About the Position: 

  • You’ll be mentoring staff and completing the drafting of the Laboratory Quality Management manual system 
  • You’ll need experience in a food, water, fisheries or agricultural related field
  • You’ll be responsible for guiding staff and allowing them to successfully complete activities in future
