Indigenous Pathways - Business Development Trainer - Fiji

Australian Volunteers Program
  • Use your business skills to volunteer for an organisation supporting indigenous women in Fiji
  • 2.5 week assignment
  • Living and accommodation allowance provided

The Australian Volunteers Program is an Australian government funded initiative that has placed skilled volunteers overseas for over 60 years. Our volunteer assignments are driven by local objectives and needs of our partner organisations, located in 26 countries across Indo-Pacific.

As an Australian volunteer, we will support you by providing return airfares, living and accommodation allowances, health and security support, pre-departure and in-country training, and support for partners and children as well as people living with a disability.

The Organisation

Soqosoqo Vakamarama I’Taukei Cakaudrove (SVTC) is a membership-based organisation which exists to support iTaukei (Indigenous) women in the Cakaudrove province. One of the key strategic priorities of the organisation is to develop and strengthen the economic empowerment program in supporting its members. Whilst, there had been many training opportunities available for members to establish small business or microfinance projects, they do not often produce sustainable results. Given the cultural environment in which these women operate in, their small thriving businesses are often affected by their traditional roles, cultural expectations, family relations and lack of business oriented thinking. As a result, these women lose their drive to sustain their businesses and require more than just technical business trainings but inspiration, motivation and opportunities to learn skills and knowledge from business people that share the same experience in similar cultural settings. This project builds on from a previous assignment but focuses more on motivating, inspiring and changing the mindset of aspiring indigenous women in business to achieve sustainable outcomes on their small businesses or microfinance projects.

The Role

  • The group of Indigenous volunteers will facilitate group training sessions and provide one to one support/advice to participants including potential field visits to identified small business project sites. This will provide opportunities for exchange of learning and experiences, both for the Trainers and participants, and may be the start of a long-term relationship with the organisation.
  • To be successful for this assignment you will need to have experience running your own business or have business development experience. We are also looking for individuals with the ability to deliver group training and provide one to one support to others.
  • Gain the opportunity to utilise your business skills, living and working in Savusavu, Fiji.
