ABOUT THE ASSIGNMENT

Pohnpei Department of Health Services (DoHS) vision is to provide a holistic, integrated system of health care that optimises quality of life for Pohnpeian citizens, residents, and visitors through effective health promotion, disease prevention efforts, and quality health care services. DoHS was merged with with the Division of Social Affairs. This division oversees the youth, women, senior citizen and disability programs and other services.

Disability inclusiveness is becoming a central cross-cutting theme for Pohnpei since FSM signed the UN Convention on the elimination of discrimination against women (CEDAW), UN Convention on the rights of the child (CRC), and most recently the UN Convention on the rights of people with disabilities (CRPD). There are few programs in the government that focus on areas that are relevant to gender issues and disability inclusiveness. Support is required to help in ensuring disability inclusiveness remains in all activities within the state-level plans. Whilst there is some awareness around people with disabilities in Pohnpei, it is still often misunderstood and there is not much local capacity in the field of disability inclusion. This assignment is vital, to enhance local capacity and provide high-quality support in the field of disability inclusiveness to local partners.
