The Australian Volunteers Program is an Australian government funded initiative that has placed skilled volunteers overseas for over 60 years. Our volunteer assignments are driven by local objectives and needs of our partner organisations, located in 26 countries across Indo-Pacific.

As an Australian volunteer, we will support you by providing return airfares, living and accommodation allowances, health and security support, pre-departure and in-country training, and support for partners and children as well as people living with a disability.

The Organisation

St. Giles hospital was established in 1884 and has been providing mental health services to people of Fiji since then. The hospital provides In Patient, Out Patient, Pharmacy, Forensic, Consultation Liaison Psychiatry services. It has Admission & Discharge Planning Unit (ADPU), Child & Adolescent (CWM), Counselling Unit, Food and Nutrition. Currently St. Giles Hospital is a 100 bed hospital and is the only psychiatry hospital in the region. The hospital also provides mental health services and support to all divisional hospitals. It overseas and supports the functioning of stress management wards in each division. One of the needs identified by Saint Giles Psychiatric Hospital is the lack suitably qualified Counsellors to work in the area of Alcohol and Other Drug abuse. Further to this there are no courses available or offered in the country for AOD counselling. In the 2009 – 2014 Roadmap for Democracy and Sustainable Socio-Economic Development, health related policy objectives were determined, the Ministry of Health has translated these objectives through 7 Health Outcomes Goals in which improved mental health care has been identified as one. 

The Role

  • In this mentoring role you will provide AOD counselling services to patients of St. Giles hospital and develop appropriate training to the mental health workers in AOD counselling.
  • To be successful in the role you will have a relevant tertiary qualifications in Counselling, Youth Work, Social Work, Community Services or other health related area. You will have extensive experience in the AOD field as well as in mental health and counselling.
  • Make a positive contribution to mental health services for the people of Fiji.
