Braille and Mobility Trainer (voluntary) - Tonga

Australian Volunteers Program

About the assignment:

Tonga National Visual Impairment Association (TNVIA) is a non-profit organisation, established to empower persons with disabilities (PWD), especially those who are blind or partially sighted to live independently and to shift from a charity focus to a human rights approach. There is currently a critical need for a Braille and Mobility Trainer as part of the educational process for students with visual impairments. The number of students is increasing and there is no local expertise to help support the TNVIA program. There has been limited opportunity for professional development, particularly with updating the current practices of braille and mobility and understanding the impact for people with visual impairments. Having a skilled volunteer would assist TNVIA in building the capacity of teachers and staff, as well as provide more awareness in these areas for the community.

  • In this role you will support and strengthen the overall services provided by TNVIA. You will support the implementation of the program, identify and strengthen gaps in student knowledge and further assist with training of staff for home visits
  • To be successful in this role you will have a Certificate III or IV in Disability Services, a certificate in Braille (preferable), and a few years experience working in a similar setting
  • Take your passion for disability inclusion and inclusive education to the Pacific. In this role you will have the opportunity to make a positive contribution promoting inclusive communities
