Senior Field Ecologist - Mildura

Australian Wildlife Conservancy
  • Play a lead role in implementing a major conservation project

Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is Australia’s largest private owner or manager of land for conservation, protecting threatened wildlife across more than 6 M ha. Our mission is the effective conservation of all Australian native species and the habitats in which they live.

In NSW, AWC has been contracted by the NSW Government to reintroduce up to 10 species of threatened mammals into Mallee Cliffs National Park in south-west NSW and 6 species into the Pilliga forest in north-central NSW. At Mallee Cliffs AWC has constructed the largest feral predator-free fenced area on mainland Australia (9,500 Ha), into which locally-extinct mammal species will be reintroduced. The reintroduction program commenced in 2019 with the release of the Greater Bilby and a further 7 species are scheduled for release in 2021. AWC is also responsible for delivering conservation management and an associated science program including long-term ecological monitoring and research across the Park. In NSW, AWC also runs a reintroduction program at Scotia Wildlife Sanctuary, near Wentworth, a conservation science program at North Head, Sydney and post-fire recovery projects along the Great Dividing Range. This position may be required to assist with delivery of the regional program and elsewhere across AWC as required.

Reporting to the Senior Wildlife Ecologist at Mallee Cliffs, the Senior Field Ecologist will take a lead role in implementing AWC’s on-ground science program at Mallee Cliffs. The role will involve delivery of the annual work plan including managing large field surveys, undertaking translocations of threatened mammals, co-ordinating and supervising staff, data management and reporting. Applicants must be able to demonstrate strong leadership skills, an excellent work ethic and high standards of scientific integrity. A higher degree (Honours or equivalent) and at least 5 years of work experience in applied conservation biology or equivalent is essential. The successful applicant will have an established background in conducting ecological fieldwork with extensive experience in animal handling and a demonstrated capacity to lead a team of ecologists in the field. The position is based at Mildura, Victoria for an initial period of 2 years.

Key duties of the Senior Field Ecologist include:

  • Taking a lead role in the on-ground delivery of AWC’s science program at Mallee Cliffs. Major tasks in the science program include undertaking ecological monitoring, species reintroductions, and targeted research activities.
  • Provide day to day management and leadership in the field to a team of AWC ecologists.
  • Contribute to the reporting and data management of AWC’s science program at Mallee Cliffs.
  • Contribute to the communication of AWC’s science program to the scientific community and to the public as required.
  • Assist with AWC’s fundraising activities.

This is an opportunity to join the science program of Australia’s largest non-government conservation organisation and to make an important contribution to a nationally-significant applied ecology program.
