Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is the largest private (non-profit) owner of land for conservation in Australia, protecting endangered wildlife at 30 sanctuaries in which we own or manage in partnership, covering a total of more than 6.5 million hectares in iconic regions such as the Kimberley, Cape York, the Top End and Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. About The Kimberley

AWC own 3 sanctuaries in the Kimberley region: Mornington, Marion Downs, and Charnley-River, as well as managing in partnership: the Dambimangari, Wilinggin, and Yulmbu Aboriginal Corporations, and the Commonwealth Department of Defence controlled Yampi Sound Training Area. In total, these sanctuaries and partnerships cover a combined area of over 4.3 million ha and protect numerous threatened habitats and species.

About The Roles

AWC is seeking several practically minded Land Management Officers to assist in the implementation of a range of land management programs. Land management at AWC is all about working on the ground to make sure our conservation interests are well-looked-after. Our land management model is centred around fire management feral animal control and weed management. Experience in these areas is desirable but more important is being comfortable working practically on the land in a remote wilderness setting.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have to have practical hands-on skills and a love for physical outdoor work. We are looking for people that are able to demonstrate:

• The ability to use a range of plant and equipment and carry out some routine mechanical maintenance to:
  • 4WD’s, ATV’s, tractors.
  • Generators, pumps etc – any experience with solar power systems highly regarded
  • Power tools including chainsaws, welders, and electrical tools.
  • Fire-fighting and weed spraying equipment.

• The ability to improvise and find practical solutions with limited resources.
• Experience living and working in remote areas and a willingness to spend extended periods in the field.
• Experience across a range of natural resource / land management functions is desirable but not essential
• Good communication and interpersonal skills across a wide range of groups including neighbouring landholders, scientists, traditional owners, volunteers, contractors and visitors is essential.
• Demonstrated capability to work alone or equally able to work as part of a small team.
• The ability to organise, co-ordinate, prioritise and execute a number of tasks in an efficient manner.
• Ability to use standard business software packages including Word, Excel, and email.

• A qualification or practical experience in a range of trades (building, mechanical, fencing, plumbing, welding, steel fabrication & electrical) is advantageous.

• An interest in nature conservation.

This is a unique opportunity to join Australia’s largest non-government conservation organisation and help shape the future of private sector conservation in Australia by carrying out land management that is closely integrated with comprehensive science and monitoring programs in one of Australia’s most important ecological regions. The successful candidate will be offered a competitive salary package which includes a base salary of $55,000 to $62,500 depending on skills and experience, plus 10% superannuation plus accommodation on sanctuary plus a range of additional benefits.
