~ Play a lead role in implementing a nationally significant applied ecology project ~
Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is the largest private (non-profit) owner of land for conservation in Australia, protecting endangered wildlife at 30 sanctuaries in which we own or manage in partnership, covering a total of more than 6.5 million hectares in iconic regions such as the Kimberley, Cape York, the Top End and Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. With a focus on practical land management, informed by world-class science, AWC is implementing a dynamic new model for conservation.
In NSW, AWC has been contracted by the NSW Government to reintroduce up to 10 species of locally-extinct mammals into Mallee Cliffs National Park in south-west NSW. This partnership between Government and a non-profit conservation organisation represents an exciting new model for conservation in Australia. At Mallee Cliffs AWC has constructed a large feral predator-free fenced area (c. 9,500 Ha), into which threatened species reintroductions are occurring. The reintroduction program commenced in 2019 and 2020 with the release of the Greater Bilby, Greater Stick-nest Rat and Numbat and a further 7 species are scheduled for release in 2021. The reintroduction program at Mallee Cliffs will contribute to the long-term conservation of several iconic Australian mammal species as part of a nationally focused conservation strategy. AWC is also responsible for delivering an associated science program across the Park which includes long-term ecological monitoring and research activities.
Reporting to the Senior Wildlife Ecologist, the Field Ecologist will play an integral role in delivering AWC’s on-ground science program at Mallee Cliffs National Park. The role will involve undertaking extensive fieldwork including translocations of threatened mammals and long-term ecological monitoring. In 2021 this work will have a strong reintroduction focus. The Field Ecologist will also undertake data management, reporting and assisting with research activities.
A Bachelor’s degree with Honours in Ecology, Conservation Biology (or related field) is essential. Experience in conducting ecological fieldwork and associated data management will be highly regarded. The successful applicant will have a demonstrated capacity to work harmoniously and productively in a team environment, and must have well-developed communication and organisational skills. The successful candidate must be willing to travel to undertake extended periods fieldwork in a variety of locations around Australia. The position will commence by March 2021 and is based at Mildura, Victoria for an initial period of 3 years.
This a unique opportunity to develop your career with Australia’s largest non-government conservation organisation and to apply your skills to contribute to the long-term protection of iconic threatened species.
