The Australian Childhood Foundation has a strong reputation for delivery of clinical services, professional training and secondary consultations built upon up-to-date; evidence based theoretical frameworks including the neurobiology of trauma, attachment and relational theories and child development. This theoretical framework provides the foundation upon which all elements of care and intervention are provided by the Foundation’s therapeutic care service.

The Foundation has a long history in the provision of clinical programs for children who engage in harmful sexual behaviour. The Senior Advisor in this role will work with children and young people aged between 8-17 years who are engaging in harmful sexual behaviour and who are placed in residential care in the DHHS North Division. Service delivery extends across the North Metro Area, Loddon Area and Mallee Area.

The key role of the Senior Advisor is to act as a specialist therapeutic consultant and practitioner within residential care programs across the North Division in which harmful sexual behaviours are a key challenge for the young people living in residential care.

Key objectives of the role

  • Provide clinical leadership in the implementation of the therapeutic program including assessment procedures, needs identification, risk assessment, safety planning, practice guidelines, case documentation and transition planning
  • Work in partnership with DHHS Placement Coordination Unit and Out of Home Care providers in the North Division to deliver a coordinated, effective and timely response to children and young people who have engaged in harmful sexual behaviours and are living in residential care
  • Provide referral and assessment advice to Child Protection, Placement Co-ordination Unit and residential care providers regarding placement matching of children and young people
  • Provide direct individual and parent/child counselling to address harmful sexual behaviours and underlying trauma of children and young people referred to the program
  • Provide six full-day training packages to all residential care staff across North Division
  • Engage with Out of Home Care providers to plan and develop online foundational training for residential carers about providing therapeutic, responsive care and safety planning for young people with harmful sexual behaviours

About you key selection criteria

  • An appropriate tertiary qualification in Psychology, Social Work or a related discipline
  • Eligibility for membership of the relevant professional association
  • Substantial experience in the area of harmful sexual behaviours in children and young people
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and direct service in the clinical assessment and treatment of children, young people and families
  • Highly developed ability to provide secondary consultation and advice to clinicians and other professionals
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver training related to the identification, risk assessment and management of harmful sexual behaviours into the residential care workforce
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead practice and program development in a specialist area of challenging and complex practice
  • Demonstrated knowledge of trauma, attachment and neurobiology frameworks and theories
  • Demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively and the capacity to negotiate and liaise with DHHS, Out of Home Care providers, education, other agencies and the community
  • A sophisticated understanding of the complexity of the service system and the issues involved in providing services to statutory clients
  • A current Victorian driver’s licence or equivalent
