Outline & Purpose of Role:

Australia for UNHCR is an international aid agency that raises funds from Australian donors to support the humanitarian operations of the UN Refugee Agency. Established in 2000 as part of a global fundraising network it has now raised more than $350 million from a broad network of individuals, community and corporate partners.

Reporting to the Head of Communications & Public Affairs, this role is responsible for developing and delivering thoughtful and compelling content and strategy across multiple platforms, and works closely with fundraising teams to develop and drive storytelling content to engage mass and specialist audiences.

This is a senior role and requires an experienced communicator who can work collaboratively with and provide communications counsel to a wide range of stakeholders. Managing the content team, the role will provide strong leadership and project management expertise to successfully manage a number of content responsibilities.

The role deputises for the Head of Communications & Public Affairs and as well, works closely with UNHCR communications colleagues in Geneva, Copenhagen, Canberra and field operations across the globe.

The ideal candidate will approach work with high-energy, drive and internal motivation to raise awareness of refugees and displaced people.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualising, writing and editing audience-centric stories that help to raise awareness and fundraising income for UNHCR;
  • Integrated communications programs, brand and editorial strategy;
  • Working with fundraising teams, both at A4U and globally, to develop and drive campaigns and content to engage audiences with our work;
  • Responsible for managing communications needs of internal teams and;
  • Supporting existing donor relations.

The successful applicant will possess the following attributes:

  • Significant content ideation, development and production experience in various leadership roles
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in communications, journalism, marketing or a similar discipline
  • Understanding of the international aid and/or fundraising sector, with experience in the sector being an advantage
  • Demonstrated competence in copywriting, adaptable to different formats
  • Hands-on team player with the ability to work at both strategic and tactical levels in a high-content and fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated capacity to develop collaborative relationships
  • Understanding and experience in digital media
  • Proven skills in effective team leadership
  • A strong commitment to human rights, international affairs and UNCHR’s work with refugees and displaced people
