Our Media Advisers play a critical role in ensuring the organisation is highly recognised, widely respected, and ultimately trusted.

The team works to build profile, grow and protect reputation, and support public advocacy on issues such as emergency management, migration support, social inclusion and international humanitarian law.

As a Media Adviser, you will be responsible for:

• monitoring the daily and long term news cycle to identify opportunities and risks, and to develop ways to respond
• working closely with internal stakeholder groups such as Emergency Services, Migration Support and Community Programs to maximise positive media coverage and manage risk
• developing, and pitching, strategically aligned and powerful, human-centred stories to news outlets to promote our work
• participating in cross-directorate teams and an oncall roster to respond to media enquiries during disaster response, emergencies and campaigns

What you will bring

• Previous track record of human-centred storytelling, for example working as a journalist
• Demonstrable contacts in major newsrooms
• Considerable experience working with media outlets, responding to media enquiries and briefing spokespeople
• Detailed understanding of the media landscape in Australia, including new and digital media
• Demonstrated ability to identify and develop media-ready stories and messaging for spokespeople
• Proven ability to think and execute strategically about messaging and audiences
• Strong diplomatic, influencing and persuasive skills, with proven ability to build trust and rapport with a diverse range of people across multiple locations, from senior leadership to on-the-ground volunteers or case studies
• Demonstrated ability to influence and guide colleagues to develop fit-for-purpose media content
• Proven ability to work to deadlines and perform in high-pressure situations
