Position Objectives

An excellent opportunity exists for a suitably qualified Social Worker to join our Allied Health Care Team on a contract basis. Applicants must hold a degree or graduate diploma in social work, behavioural or social science, rehabilitation counselling or other allied health field and where required, relevant registrations or professional membership. Experience with evidence-based practice models and motivation to achieve outcomes ensures a quality service to job seekers, and professional communication builds relationships and overcomes challenging client behaviours.

The key duties include:

As part of a multidisciplinary team delivering high quality mental health services in accordance with the Mental Health Services Strategic Plan, Mental Health Service principles, National Mental Health Standards, Agency policy, legal requirements and relevant professional competencies, the Social Worker will:

  • Undertake the delivery of quality care to clients of the Child and Adolescent, Adult Community, Inpatient and Extended Treatment and Older Persons Mental Health Service based on best practice principles and within a collaborative and multi-disciplinary framework.
  • Provide a specialist assessment and treatment service to clients of Child and Adolescent, Adult Community, Inpatient and Extended Treatment and Older Persons Mental Health Service and their families or carers.
  • Promote community awareness in relation to mental health and act as a consultant to other agencies with regard to the support and management of clients with mental health needs.
  • Demonstrated expertise, skills and/or social work experience in drug and alcohol, mental health, domestic violence, child protection, victims of crimes, trauma, homelessness, sudden death and the coronial process.
  • Demonstrated competencies in crisis intervention, short term solution focused intervention, motivational interviewing, relapse prevention and harm minimization, grief and loss trauma informed approaches, complex assessment and discharge planning in an acute health setting.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to work in critical care settings as a member of diverse multidisciplinary teams in a high demand environment with competing demands.
  • Ability to lead and contribute to research/projects/quality and education activities within social work services with high level oral, written communication and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated competencies and/or experience in the provision of clinical supervision of staff and students.

Desirable Criteria

  • Eligible for registration with Medicare as an approved provider
  • Bilingual language skills - Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi, Turkish, Candidates Filipino/Tagalog, Urdu, Greek, Spanish (highly regarded)

Essential Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Skills & Experience:

Degree in Social Work giving eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:

  1. Conviction checks in the following areas:
    • a) Crimes of Violence
    • b) Sex-Related Offences
    • c) Serious Drug Offences
    • d) Crimes involving dishonesty
  2. Identification check
    • Disciplinary action in previous employment check
