Legal Practitioner / Director (Voluntary) - Australia Wide

AusACPDM

The Australasian Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AusACPDM or Academy) is seeking a legal practitioner with an interest in Australian not-for-profit law and disability to join the AusACPDM Board of Directors for a four-year term. The new Director will provide advice and guidance to ensure the Academy meets its corporate governance obligations and understands the legal implications of decisions. All Director roles in this academy are non-remunerated.

About AusACPDM

The AusACPDM (www.ausacpdm.org.au) provides evidence-based multidisciplinary scientific education for health professionals and people with lived experience of childhood onset disability; and promotes and advocate for excellence in research, knowledge translation and best practice clinical care for children and adults with cerebral palsy and developmental conditions. The Academy brings together health professionals, researchers and people with lived experience of disability to share knowledge, learn about recent research and advocate for better care for people with childhood onset disability. Our members do research, provide care and services to people with disability, develop policies and advocate for change that will allow people with childhood onset disability to actively participate in community life.

Our five-year plan: By 2025, AusACPDM will continue its roles as an international leader in education and knowledge translation for multidisciplinary practitioners, researchers and people with lived experience. Our new strategic plan will be published soon, view the 2015-2020 strategic plan here.

The Academy is a Company limited by guarantee. The Board consists of 12 elected Directors and six Committees, with up to 80 Committee members from across Australia and New Zealand. The AusACPDM currently has 247 members and is a founding member of the International Alliance of Academies of Childhood Disability. Our activities include delivering a biennial scientific conference (approximately 600 delegates and an international 2022 conference anticipating up to 1,500 delegates); actively providing and sharing online educational opportunities; a scholarship program; an awards program; and partnering with our international colleagues to promote evidence-based practice in the field of cerebral palsy and childhood onset disabilities.

The role

As the AusACPDM grows its activities and operates in an increasingly complex world, the Board is seeking a legal practitioner to become a Director of the Board. The Board meets quarterly via telecommunication and at least once in a face-to-face capacity every two years. The role will involve contribution to Board decisions on a range of issues. One of the specific challenges faced by the Board which would benefit from legal knowledge is the contemporisation of our constitution.

About you

You will be a legal practitioner grounded in Australian not for profit law with an interest in good governance. Ideally you will also have an interest in disability, research or professional education and be looking for a Board role working with volunteer Directors to improve the operations and management of a growing academy.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited for interviews via Zoom on 1 and 2 December. All applicants will be informed of the outcome.
