Aurukun Shire Council is an Indigenous community of approximately 1400 people and currently seeking suitably qualified Assistant Managers for their Early Childhood Centre.

Duties

Operational Management

In consultation with the Manager, Koolkan Early Childhood Centre:

  • Participate in on the job operational management training to enable smooth service operation in the absence of the Manager
  • Additional duties as required when relieving Manager of Child Care Centre.

People Management

In consultation with the Manager of Koolkan Early Childhood Centre:

  • Provide culturally sensitive and respectful leadership to the team of childcare workers and teachers to ensure effective delivery of quality services across all programs.
  • Supervise and support staff to achieve work goals and objectives of the Childcare Centre
  • Provide on the job mentoring and support as required to assist staff to learn and apply new skills and knowledge on the job.
  • Relieve meal breaks as required.
  • Provide support to all hub activities as required.
  • Undertake disciplinary action in accordance with Council’s policies and procedures
  • Establish succession plans within the Centre, through the development of ‘in house’ capacity and skills
  • Ensure that staff carry out their duties in accordance with their position descriptions, Council’s human resource policies and procedures and all legislative requirements
  • Ensure staff are properly inducted into the workplace and that they comply with Council’s Workplace Health and Safety policies
  • Fully participate in personal annual performance appraisal in accordance with council’s Performance Management System.

General

  • Maintain the cultural integrity of the Centre to reflect the community in which the Centre operates
  • Ensure all incidents, accidents and injuries are reported and documented
  • Ensure the maintenance of compliant quality, environment and Workplace Health and Safety systems alerting the Manager of Child Care to any issues that require attention
  • Build and sustain partnerships with and between the Centre, the school, the community and other government agencies
  • Undertake other duties as directed or required by the Director of Community Services or Manager of Child Care under the context of this position.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience

  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, with ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Indigenous people.
  • Must hold a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (or equivalent) and at least five years’ experience in the field.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong risk management and contingency planning skills
  • Willingness to undertake professional development to support professional growth in early childhood and leadership.
  • Computer literacy particularly in aspects of the Microsoft Office Suite of programs
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, independently and as part of a team to achieve positive outcomes
  • Experience mentoring, supervising and supporting early childhood staff
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross cultural space.
  • Understanding of local government operations and procedures
  • Current First Aid and Resuscitation Certificate/s and Manual Driver’s License
  • Safe Food Handling
  • Current Blue Card.
