About the organisation:

The Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Women’s Legal Services NQ Inc. is a community legal service providing access to justice and the law for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women in North Queensland.

We are seeking two (2) solicitors to provide legal advice, court representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in the Townsville and NQ outreach areas. The position may involve some day travel to identified towns or communities for outreach service and CLE workshops as required.

The successful applicants must hold an Unrestricted Practicing Certificate.

Preference will be given to applicants with experience in the areas of Domestic Violence, Child Protection and Family Law. Preference will be given to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander women who have the relevant experience and qualifications. For non-indigenous applicants, experience working with Aboriginal & Torres Islander communities will be highly regarded.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Laws with minimum 2 years PAE
  • Eligible to hold an Unrestricted Practising Certificate

Knowledge, Skills & Expertise:

  • Admission as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court and the High Court of Australia
  • Capacity to provide quality legal advice and casework in relation to Domestic and Family Violence matters, Child Protection and family law
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women preferred
  • Experience providing legal advice to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women preferred
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills. (Non-indigenous applicants must have strong communication skills with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women)
  • Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and to work independently and provide supervision to junior solicitors
  • Demonstrated ability in the use of current computer technology
  • Hold a current, unrestricted Queensland Driver’s Licence
  • Hold a current Blue Card or be eligible to obtain same
