About the role

The FWS In Home Family Mentor will work with families in partnership with the Family Care Coordinator and Family Counsellor. The FWS In Home Family Mentor will coach parents on how to establish productive early morning and late afternoon/night time routines. The purpose is to help parents manage their household and build the confidence of parents.

The FWS In Home Family Mentor will facilitate and establish practical activities and strategies in the family home that encourage positive bonding and natural nurturing, these include organising whole of family meals, tucking all children in bed individually and spending time to talk about their day, help organising weekend family outings, facilitate parental reading to young children, encouraging parents to help with their children’s homework etc.  

The FWS In Home Family Mentor will work with parents to provide practical supports in the home. The FWS In Home Family Mentor will operate solely from a coaching and teaching approach – that means – not doing for the family, but rather showing, teaching and reinforcing the learning activities to empower parents. These supports include teaching parents how to budget their income, shop and cook healthy meals, maintain a tidy household etc.

About You

Essential:

  • Previous knowledge, understanding and experience of parenting responsibilities and challenges, for example, caring for children and managing a busy household.
  • Certificate 4 or higher in either Youth or Family Intervention, community services, early childhood, nursing, healthcare or any related discipline.
  • Eligibility to gain a successful Licensed Care Services suitability check (LCS-2) through the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services and a Blue Card.
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and sensitivity to, the intricacies of working with Aboriginal children and families.
  • Demonstrated experience in effective case management with families that include assessment, developing and implementing case plans and conducting regular case reviews.
  • Excellent written skills, particularly in writing daily case notes.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication, and liaison skills including the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Proven ability to work as an active member of the team including the sharing of knowledge, skills and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet targets and performance outcomes.
  • Ability to support a continuous improvement model for achieving outcomes. Working with Children’s Card (Blue Card) or be eligible to apply
