LGBTIQ+ Community Coordinator

Asylum Seekers Centre

Why ASC?

People seeking asylum are at the heart of our purpose. We work with people seeking asylum so they have the support they need to make their own life in Australia while waiting for their claim for protection to be recognised.

We rely on philanthropic donations and fundraising, some state government support, a dedicated team of professional staff and a network of hundreds of volunteers to undertake our work.

The successful candidate will join a supported, motivated, energetic and compassionate team who work together to deliver vital services, engage our community and influence policy and legal change for people seeking asylum.

THE ROLE

We are looking for a dynamic communicator and group facilitator who can support and reinvigorate ASC’s LGBTIQ+ Peer Support Group. This is a part-time, 12-month funded role, one day per week.

Reporting to the Community Engagement Manager, this role will work closely with the Community Engagement team to organise and facilitate LGBTIQ+ community group events, connect group members to services and opportunities, and facilitate consultation sessions with group members to identify projects for co-design.

The LGBTIQ+ Community Coordinator will work collaboratively across ASC teams and the wider sector to develop and foster opportunities for support, connection and advocacy in line with the group's purpose and ASC's strategic plan.

THE PERSON

The ideal person for this role will have strong interpersonal and facilitation skills, particularly in working with people from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. You will have a deep understanding of, and respect for, LGBTIQ+ communities and human rights. You work with a trauma-informed, culturally respectful, and strengths-based approach. You are flexible, adaptive, and use creativity to problem solve complex situations.

You would have a minimum 2 years of professional experience working within the LGBTIQ+ sector, a strong understanding of issues that affect people seeking asylum, and a commitment to developing this knowledge.
