The Asylum Seekers Centre (ASC), Sydney is a place of welcome and provides practical and personal support for people living in the community who are seeking asylum.

The Community Engagement Program aims to facilitate opportunities for culturally-appropriate connections and meaningful participation of people seeking asylum, within the Australian community.

THE ROLE

The Community Participation Lead plays a significant role in identifying social and recreational supports available to people seeking asylum. The emphasis of this role is to facilitate engagement activities, introductions and pathways for people to access and participate within communities.

This is a full-time position for a fixed term of 12 months, with the possibility for extension.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with the Community Engagement Manager to identify social, cultural and recreational support and opportunities available in broader communities, and how they can assist people seeking asylum.
  • Coordinate and supervise Program Volunteers to deliver and facilitate a range of group-based engagement activities at Newtown, Auburn and in community, while working closely with key partners and broader stakeholders
  • Mentor participants and volunteers to deliver community-driven solutions, fostering skill development and self-determination
  • Support food distribution and logistics, and collaborate to identify partnership opportunities to improve people's access to affordable food options.
  • Actively seek to conduct warm referrals and connect people to appropriate support systems in their local community
  • Collect quantitative and qualitative information that supports ASC’s advocacy goals.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

To be successful in this position, it is essential that you can demonstrate in your application:

  • Experience assisting people seeking asylum or other vulnerable people to achieve rights, wellness, and autonomy
  • Respect for and ability to support inclusion of diversity in its many forms
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, written and oral skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to promote a strong positive work culture and lead teams of volunteers
  • Demonstrated experience in activity or event management with vulnerable people
  • Proven ability to create and maintain wide-ranging networks, turning connections into tangible outcomes for ASC people
  • Ability to take initiative and think innovatively and creatively
  • Ability to work effectively in a high performing and faced past environment
  • Experience designing or implementing projects using Co-Design and/or Community Development principles.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ASC is delivering services differently. The successful candidate must be flexible to work from the office or work remotely as necessary.

DESIRABLE

It is beneficial in this position that you can demonstrate the following qualities:

  • Experience in coordinating support and goal planning for people with complex needs
  • Tertiary qualifications in human services, social work, mental health or other relevant discipline
  • Applicants who bring existing professional networks in the Inner West and/or Western Suburbs of Sydney will be well regarded.
