The Regional Anthropologists will be responsible for providing anthropological advice in relation to the implementation of the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act 1976 (Cth) (ALRA) and the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), and contributing to the NLC’s Land Interest Reference research relevant to Aboriginal peoples and groups in its jurisdiction.

The key focus of these roles is to identify, represent and assist traditional Aboriginal owners and Native Title Holders in matters arising from the acquisition, use, occupation and management of their land under the ALRA and the Native Title Act.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required, as is a Degree in Anthropology or relevant professional qualifications in related discipline, and extensive fieldwork and research experience with Aboriginal people.

Applicants will be expected to possess organisational, administrative and computer skills of a high order, with the ability to manage projects and meet deadlines. You will be required to undertake a range of Anthropological duties including ethnographic research and analysis, consultation, mediation and liaison with constituents and community organisations, and to produce reports for various stakeholders.

Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures and the issues affecting Indigenous peoples, with the ability to communicate and engage sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal people is essential.

Applicants should possess substantial familiarity with the ‘traditional ownership’ criteria of ALRA and a good knowledge of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976, the Native Title Act 1993, the Northern Territory Sacred Sites Act 1989 and other legislation which impact Aboriginal people in the NLC region.

NLC are currently working on a regionalisation strategy which means that one of these positions will be based in Nhulunbuy and potential for the other position to be located in Jabiru.

Significant travel to remote areas using 4WD vehicles is involved so possession of a ‘C’ class driver’s licence and ability to drive safely is essential, as is a willingness to work and be based in regional locations for extended periods.
