The Northern Land Council (NLC) is an independent statutory authority of the Commonwealth established under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth) (ALRA). The NLC is responsible for assisting Aboriginal peoples in the Top End of the Northern Territory to acquire and manage their traditional lands and seas.

The NLC is seeking a senior practitioner with management experience to join our vibrant Legal Branch as the Legal Practice Manager (Land Rights). This role reports to the Principal Legal Officer and works closely with the Legal Practice Manager (Native Title) and Legal Practice Manager (Land Claims).

As the Legal Practice Manager (Land Rights) you will be responsible for managing a team of about 8 regional lawyers and overseeing the NLC's legal practice in relation to Land Use Agreements and other matters under the ALRA, as well as minerals and energy projects as required.

Your skill and experience in the supervision and development of staff will ensure the smooth operation of the NLC’s Land Rights practice and the effective delivery of the NLC’s statutory functions as a Land Council under the ALRA.

Collaborating with other professionals in a cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary organisation, you will use your professional judgement and highly developed communication and interpersonal skills to engage in effective consultation with traditional Aboriginal owners, oversee agreement-making, and advise the NLC about interests in Aboriginal land and related matters.

The successful applicant will be a qualified legal practitioner admitted in the Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia, with a minimum 5 years’ post admission experience. Previous experience in legal practice management will be looked on favourably. Expertise in any of property, corporate and commercial, environment and planning, energy and resources, or mining law is highly desirable.
