The Warmun Community Inc (WCI) is seeking Expressions of Interest for this important position.

Warmun is an Aboriginal community in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. It sits on the Great Northern Highway, approximately 200km south-west of Kununurra, 160km north of Halls Creek and 800km northeast of Broome. It is a well-established community with a floating population of around 6-700, mostly Gija people. The majority of people reside in Warmun while up to a third of the population comes and goes from the surrounding outstations of Frog Hollow (largest outstation community with an approximate population of 60 people), Bow River, Norton Bore, Violet Valley and Crocodile Hole. Outstations have basic infrastructure; houses, water, diesel-generated power supply, septic systems and road access. Frog Hollow also has a small Independent Aboriginal School.

Warmun Community and outstations are managed centrally by an incorporated body [Warmun Community (Turkey Creek) Incorporated] with an elected Community Council. It has a police station (established in 2006) with two full-time police officers; a state government health clinic relocated and opened in 2014; a child protection worker; a school run by the Catholic Education Office of WA with student enrolments up to 120 from kindergarten to Year 9; an early learning centre with intake of around ten preschool children; a community-owned roadhouse (Warmun Roadhouse) and store (Wungkul Store); the internationally acclaimed Warmun Art Centre and specialist Kija Rangers who manage a variety of environmental management programs.

Warmun Community’s main sources of funding are Commonwealth and State Government grants and income generated by community-owned enterprises.

A very special person is being sought to respectfully and professionally assist this strongly culturally-based community, which is striving to maintain traditional culture and values, and its leadership, address diverse and complex matters affecting its future social and economic development within a region that potentially offers many opportunities for social and economic advancement, including the arts and pastoral industries.

The preferred highly skilled manager will possess all the technical skills, knowledge and experience required to successfully manage the municipal services and diverse organisational operations of this self-managed community. They will also demonstrate a deep commitment to the advancement of the Warmun community and its members.

The CEO:

• Is the principal staff member and carries overall responsibility for the successful day to day management and operation of WCI, including delivery of municipal services and a number of commercial enterprises
• Is responsible for assisting the Council with strategic planning, identification and accessing of financial and other resources, implementing, monitoring and reporting on the success of municipal services and program delivery within Warmun, and
• As required and directed, represent WCI and its Council in meetings with government, industry and the general public
